I'm at 2nd and Mkt right now after returning my PCS car. Oh Lordy has the nightlife here changed.

I'm expecting a shooting here any minute so I'm not sticking around for a beer. Yikes!

MM: I'm really sorry to hear that report.

    WTF?

Well, bring all the good people to Mayfair, I suppose :)

So you're saying they're changing the complexion of Old City?

Maybe, but apparently there's still some other clubs who don't seem to mind problem patrons.

I was only standing at the corner, observing the drama. There were plenty of women there wearing clothes 3 sizes too small pushing strollers and bringing along their brood because apparently nobody can babysit, so they bring the bunch with them to the clubs.

The kids are dumped off at the parking garages and left to fend for themselves while babymomma gets her groove on.

It seems the NJ douchebag crowd who used to dominate 2 street has been completely replaced with another set of flamboyant douchebags.

I think this is a great change. Old City is going to be the next up and coming affordable housing neighborhood!

Given how much gunfire has gone off lately just within a 3 blocks either way of 2 street, I'd say the complexion has changed to blood red.

Are you telling me they're leaving kids in the car while they go out to drink ?

    Yep.

That's not a new trend, either.

I was recently told the same thing by a bar owner in the area and thought he might have been exaggerating.

    Nope.

When you have kids at a young age you don't want to feel like an old maid marooned in your house with all those screaming kids.

So why not bring the brood with you? Saves money from getting a babysitter. Dump the kids out on the street at the parking garage to guard the car, give them $30 to get soda, chips and candy and let them loose while you get your party on.

Besides, like you could find a babysitter when all your friends your age either have their own illegitimate kids they also have to look after or aren't tied down at all and are free to go out as they please.

And grandma isn't going to appreciate you dumping your lot off at her house just so you can party, take home a man and possibly have yet another kid.

    Kinda sad, isn't it?

I've been watching that area of Old City going down hill for the last 7 years with the last four being especially bad. People who say "i didn't see anything concerning" never seem to be out past midnight in that area let alone near closing time. For years I was passionate about trying to bring attention to the decline and trouble brewing but most went in one ear and out the other all for the sake of the dollar, safety and quality of life mean nothing. The rash of armed holdups are spiking this year as well as assaults and shootings. At this point I could care less if there are running gun battles every night, I just don't care anymore.

Good grief, that makes me want to throw up.

Whatever happened to "Sorry, not tonight, I don't have a babysitter?"

There is a huge dichotomy now in this area between First Firday and the art gallery crowd in the area, followed by the Saturday night crowd between 11:30 and 2:30AM.

To me there isn't much difference between 2nd and Market and 50th and Market during those hours (before the illegal bars around 50th were still open).

And I think you're right. Ignore the tenants of the buildings for a moment and just think about the property owners themselves. They could care less as long as their tenants continue to pay the rent. Doesn't matter if it's 125 or a Starr restaurant, or a 99% empty art gallery.

They will only start to care if patronage to the area takes a dramatic turn for the worse and the dollars dry up or it gets so rowdy and out of control that property damage becomes commonplace, costing money to the landlords.

Given that this is a major historical site and patronage will always be brisk here... who cares about a few shootings a week?

I think Stephen Starr has sensed the trend here too. He is smart.

2nd and Market is going to debase. The new trendy area is going to become Franklin Square, away from the chaos a few streets down.

I hope if anyone sees unattended children in a car in a parking garage, that they call 911. :ugh:

Weird, I'd never noticed that this was going on...I was out on Friday night, and didn't happen to see any baby strollers or broods of kids.

Well, I wasn't there Fri night either so I didn't know if this was a one time thing or not, but it was very prevalent Saturday night--enough for even ME to notice.

Now I'm going to be on stroller lookout, every time I'm out in my 'hood on late weekend nights. Thanks a lot, MM! ;)

Believe it or not, this is the quiet time of year for Old City. The crowds are about half of what they usually are--the other half is down the shore. The NJ douchebag crowd will be back.

What kind of parent does this?! Leaving their children in a parking garage so they can go get their drink on!? Absolutely terrible.

As for the Old City crowd, it's true, now is the quiet season. Another reason I never want summer to end.

Kinda sounds like problem gamblers who go to casinos and leave their kids in the lobby while they gamble the night away.

I thought baby mammas didn't have cars? Don't they take public transportation everywhere?

I was out sat night, 10:30pm on market. I saw all sorts of people, including kids. It all depends on your perspective the story you decide to churn about what you see.

based on what? starr's new burger shack? i live a block away from franklin square and don't see how that area could become "trendy"--where would new businesses open or move to? it's surrounded by the freeways. please explain.

I agree, I work right next to the square, and its really nice what they've done to it, but it seems so removed from any neighborhood that I can't imagine much to recommend it as a new, 'happening' place.

I think he was sort of kidding. Nan Duskin about five years a go you had a high end food store in your building named Caviar Assouline, so maybe it could happen.
