Crooner Eddie Fisher dies at age 82, was South Philly native
    By RAQUEL MARIA DILLON

    Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - South Philadelphia's Eddie Fisher, whose huge fame as a pop singer was overshadowed by scandals ending his marriages to Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor, has died. He was 82.

Fisher's clear dramatic singing voice brought him a devoted following of teenage girls in the early 1950s. He sold millions of records with 32 hit songs including "Thinking of You," "Any Time," "Oh, My Pa-pa," "I'm Yours," "Wish You Were Here," "Lady of Spain" and "Count Your Blessings."

Edwin Jack Fisher was born Aug. 10, 1928, in Philadelphia, one of seven children of a Jewish grocer. At 15 he was singing on Philadelphia radio.

After moving to New York, Fisher was adopted as a protege by comedian Eddie Cantor, who helped the young singer become a star in radio, television and records.

In 1953 Eddie Fisher was given his own fifteen minute TV show called "Coke Time" (1953), sponsored by the Coca-Cola company. This show proved to be so popular that Coke then offered Eddie a $1 million contract to be their national spokesperson. A deal of that magnitude was almost unheard of at this time and helped push Fisher towards being one of the most popular singers by 1954. In 1955 Eddie married Debbie Reynolds and daughter Carrie Fisher was born a year later, followed by son Todd Fisher in l958. Later that year, the scandal of the decade broke when stories of Eddie's affair with Elizabeth Taylor were made public. She had been widowed earlier that year when her husband Michael Todd, Eddie's best friend, died in a plane crash. The bad publicity that followed did a great deal of damage to Eddie's career, while it actually increased the amount of money Elizabeth was offered for films. He did the movie BUtterfield 8 (1960), which actually earned Taylor an Academy Award, though it was received with mixed reviews. From there it was on to the making of Cleopatra (1963), Richard Burton, another scandal, and another divorce. With his TV show long gone and hit records a thing of the past, his career in the sixties consisted mainly of stage shows in Las Vegas, New York, and smaller venues as time went on. For a few years he was married to Connie Stevens and they had two daughters, Joely Fisher and Tricia Leigh Fisher before divorcing in 1968. Eddie Fisher has written two autobiographies, the latest "Been There, Done That" published with great controversy. It seems some of the women in his past, including Debbie Reynolds, did not care for his portrayal of them. He must be given credit however, for owning up to his own actions, which led to the degradation of his career. His fifth wife, Betty Lin, passed away from lung cancer on April 15, 2001.

UPDATE: Carrie Fisher suffered Heart Attack
    ____________________________________________

Actress Carrie Fisher is in critical condition after a 'cardiac episode' on flight from London to L.A.

Fisher, 60, was rushed to the hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics shortly after noon, after her 11-hour flight touched down at LAX.

A source who was not authorized to discuss the incident said the actress was “in a lot of distress on the flight.”

A statement released by United Airlines said that medical personnel met Flight 935 from London on arrival after the crew reported a passenger was unresponsive.

“Our thoughts are with our customer at this time,” the statement read.

Just prior to arrival, a pilot told the control tower that passengers who were nurses were attending to another “unresponsive” passenger.”

“So they’re working on her right now,” the pilot said in a public recording of the conversation on liveatc.net.

My thoughts we have a 60 year old women who has a long history of drug abuse and appears obese many times.
Probably never exercised in her life.
Suffers a Heart Attack in Flight approx 15 minutes before landing.
One, How long did she go without breathing until someone used intervention?
On the plane maybe 15 minutes or less unless they saw her in distress immediately.
Two, a jet is not a hospital so care is minimal at best.
So, we must be worried that she may have stroked or suffered brain damage from lack of oxygen.
Carrie Fisher sounds from the news and tweets to have brain damage.

We can agree that Bixie has first-hand, first-person knowledge on the topic of brain damage.

A medic onboard performed CPR on the actress until paramedics arrived to take her to UCLA Medical Center, where she was placed on a ventilator.

ah, yes, the old medical degree by way of osmosis (or in Bixie's in-laws' case, Bermuda). I've been an orthopedic surgeon for nearly 18 years by that logic - since the first time i smashed an ankle, AND, AND, AND i once dated a physician, so i also had a rotation in internal medicine. my mom has some heart issues, so i guess the 10 minutes reading up on it makes me a trumpesque cardiologist too.

i'm really fabulous. the best really. you've never seen a medically trained accountant with such a steady hand while slicing and dicing. as Drake would say, i have the "wrist motion".

Exactly sort of what the news reported along with my non-medical opinion, Carrie had a heart attack about 15 minutes before the plane landed, two tweets claimed she stopped breathing, a person with some medical knowledge performed CPR. Now, I will point that CPR does NOT give oxygen to the brain. So, she was probably brain dead when paramedics arrived. But her heart was still pumping a little from the CPR. They rushed her to UCLA Medical and intubated her and placed her on a ventilator until the next of kin was notified. The family waited until Christmas was over and turned her life support off since she was brain dead.
Sorry I have to be so succinct. My Father in Law was a Doctor Doctor and my Bro in law was a Doctor.
They both passed away from heart disease the number one killer.
