Dollar General will be closing as soon as the end of December, when their lease runs out, according to a staffer there, supposedly because the landlord wants to sell the building. That's why they haven't had any regular size plastic bags the past couple weeks; the warehouse won't send any more bags, because of the imminent closing. Customers have actually begun bringing them recycled plastic bags.

FYI all: there's a fairly new Family Dollar at 17th and Washington.

    lame

That's a real downer. They were the only thing keeping South Square's ripoff prices under control. Everything non perishable was 50% or less compared to their next door neighbor.

It will be a missed convenience.

My neighbor stopped in the Dollar Store Monday, and was told that the owner's intention was to sell the building to a developer who would then create condos. No mention of a commercial space. Where are all these new tenants going to buy their stuff?

That would be an extreme uphill battle for the developer. Rezoning commercial space, especially very viable commercial space, to strictly residential would be a long, ugly battle.

The owners are trying to find another retailer to lease the property. They don't intend to sell the property, or convert it to residential. Keep in mind that store level employees/managers of national retailers aren't always kept up to speed on Landlord/Tenant negotiations.

Odd then that they removed the For Lease sign a couple months back.

    Dollar store

Went into the dollar store this weekend and it was mobbed. I think the word is out and perhaps people think they are going to have a going out of business sale.

Only problem is it's a dollar store, how much lower can their price go?

Which also made me realize it's really going to stink not having that there. The prices at South Square are easily double if not tipple for some items. And they have so many odd ball things you would almost have to get into a car to find else where.

    Is this too far?

    Family Dollar
    1700 Washington, Ave.
    Philadelphia, PA 19146-3020

If so, they have free parking.

I think we'll be OK, so long as Toll doesn't buy the property.

The reason it was so busy was that about once every month or two they have a special discount, with a coupon printed on the prior week's cash register receipts, for $5 off a $25 purchase on the following Saturday. They had that deal again this past Saturday.

In weather like this weekend that's a pretty long hike by foot for those of us living on south street.

Jesus! Coupons for a dollar store?! Now I'm doubly pissed they are leaving.

So, I went into the General (we're close) today to get my dog eggs and cheese. And a staff member I've never seen was putting stock out, like batteries. I noticed because heard the manager say last week to a delivery guy that they were sending all stock like that back, etc, getting no more deliveries. I didn't think too much of it. Then I saw the fridges had no eggs and I asked if the dairy deliveries were stopped too. And the new, super friendly staff member said that at her store, they got produce every day but she wasn't sure about their delivery schedule yet. Basically, she just transferred there (this week) and they hired two new people for that store. It would be strange to have new people train there for other stores especially since they were sending all existing staff to other locations. But she said she came there this week because this location is closest to her house. Basically, they are getting new staff and at least those new staffers say they've been told it's staying open. Anyone have facts? No manager was there at the time and I think I had been there long enough to not get the eggs. So I went across the street and paid over twice as much.

Anyone hear anything new about the status of the DG? I wonder if they'll stay open with a month-to-month lease until the building owner finds his dream tenant willing to pay more than DG is.

The For Lease signs are gone again and the clerk told me last week that DG is staying after all. Then again, the listing is still up on the broker's site.

anyone know how long they will be around? That is a great store for household stuff! the least expensive in the neighborhood. It's actually the store I use most in SWCC, followed by philly pack - which i will continue to use.

In response to the Unleashed by Petco possibly taking over the DG space, I'll just drop this classic nugget here:

Don't know, but I noticed a clearance sale sign in the window - 50% off already reduced prices. I think it only applies to a small selection of merchandise though. They were restocking new merchandise as recently as a couple days ago. Any yes, it's more than great for me. I'm not sure I'd be able to sustain a middle-class lifestyle without DG and I expect I will be grudgingly riding the 7 bus down to the DG at 23rd and Snyder at least weekly. I used the one here at least 3 times a week.
