CBS news just announced that Kenney turned over documents from his campaign that were requested by the FBI. Kenney released a statement to the effect that "When you run a good campaign you provide what they are asking for and move on". In addition, democratic committeeman Mike Mazzucca was "visited" by the FBI a few days ago. I expect that it's only a matter of time before someone takes a deal to start talking and then the fun really begins.

Bobby Henon is nobody's fool, nor anyone's stooge. He may have gotten into office through union money, but once there he has proven to be an extremely hard worker with a lot of innovative ideas that actually come to fruition.

That may be true. But does he have the wisdom to keep his personal expenses within his income and to keep his political donations within the law? The FBI seems to be going directly after him. Personally I'd prefer that the FBI be wrong, but I've found that they know what they're doing. The fact that Dougherty beat them 10 years ago leads me to believe that he understands how important it is to not cross certain lines. I certainly hope that he was able to communicate that with people in his circle, including Henon.

I try very hard not to jump to conclusions based on the premise of "innocent until proven guilty", but the steady parade of corrupt politicians in Philadelphia makes this very difficult. I was never a Jim Kenney fan because of his limited accomplishments in the two decades plus that he spent on the city council, but the fact that his campaign is in the FBI's crosshairs 7 months into his first term is very discouraging.

The problem for Kenney when he was running was that he couldn't afford to look a gift horse in the mouth. Whether he was personally aware of any specific wrongdoings regarding Local 98 et al's involvement in his campaign is doubtful.

And now, while we wait with bated breath for the main event, a private racketeering lawsuit is filed against Dougherty and Local 98:

    UPDATED:
2 top Brady aides charged in probe of payoff to 2012 primary rival | Philly.com

Two longtime top political advisers to U.S. Rep. Bob Brady were charged Tuesday by a federal grand jury with taking part in a scheme to disguise a $90,000 payment to a challenger to Brady in the 2012 primary as part of a secret plan to pay the rival to drop out of the race.

Charged were consultant Kenneth Smukler, 57, a gregarious politico and communications specialist; and Donald “D.A.” Jones, 62, a more low-key technocrat who is an expert in get-out-the vote tactics.

The pair are the latest targets in a federal probe that in recent months has netted guilty pleas from the 2012 challenger, former Philadelphia Judge Jimmie Moore, and from Moore’s former campaign manager, Carolyn Cavaness.

Although Moore and Cavaness have agreed to cooperate in the ongoing investigation by the FBI and federal prosecutors, Smukler has refused to do so. Jones has not signaled his intentions. Moore and Cavaness were charged through criminal informations, reflecting their cooperation with prosecutors, but Smukler and Jones face an indictment, suggesting they are not cooperating.

Very hard to believe the aides would have gone rogue on this, there's no personal motivation to do so. Clearly this was orchestrated by Bob Brady himself. Hopefully they will spill the beans.
