I've made a decent amount of money gambling on this crap. I suggest everyone do the same.

Buy in now, while its low. And place a limit sell on bitcoin at 13,000.

then place a limit buy for when it inevitably drops below 11,00.

Repeat. Its smart to occasionally take some of your winnings (this is just plain gambling. just like wall street) out in dollars, so that you actually have something real to show for it in case the circus leaves town unexpectedly.

Anyone know about these other cryptocurrencies?
    Litecoin and Ethereum?
    How "well" would they compete?

There is a huge bubble in crypto. Some of these cons, like TRON don’t even exist. TRON is simply a white paper as far as I know.

But there are also real coins that represent good ideas and real advancements in security. It’s not unlike the internet bubble. Yes there was a bubble. But the internet was still real, and still very useful.

Bitcoin, ETH, and litecoin are good products. I’m not telling you they aren’t overvalued. Just that they are real and represent something new and useful.

On the other hand, dentalcoin, and tattocoin, are supposed to be used by those two fields exclusively. To me that has no value. Who wants money you can only spend at the dentist? There are a lot of these.

All three of those coins are very expensive however. There are cheaper coins that are still decent ideas. XEM is a good one and it costs about $1

Ripple is not. Stay away from Ripple. You may hear that Ripple has many millions in contracts with Asian banks. They do. But not for the coin, XRP. The contracts are for another product, thier network, people are confused about that fact and that’s been driving the price increase of the coin and the press about the coin.

in addition to pulling my basis out, i realized gains equivalent to nearly half of my annual salary in alts as the market spiked over new years' weekend, so i'm quite content.

I believe it. I made an insane % gain on something called SMART.

I owned it for MAYBE 15 minutes.

I’m of the mind that this is a bubble. That crypto and blockchain have valuable security features and could even help with things like voting security.

But today, in its current state, bitcoin is not currency and the crypto market is a casino.

i agree, there IS an application somewhere for blockchain (and even more so, tangle, via MIOTA - backed by Microsoft and Samsung), but until a real world application exists, i have no faith in a sustained rally; HOWEVER, with that said, I 100% believe that we are in the middle of a trading lull and this time next year, i'll be stuntin' in a new M5, my home paid off, and looking at beachside homes in Elandsbaai complete with desalinization.

South Africa? Better build a big wall. And buy lotsa guns..
    Very violent country..
That's what happens after hundreds of years of violent repression. Oddly, the violence doesn't simply disappear. Broken, damaged people persist, and abuse others, who perpetuate the cycle of violence.
    I'll pass.
    (oh wait, I wasn't invited? #SAD)

Bitcoin's demise may occur in a most unexpected manner.

Child abuse imagery found within bitcoin's blockchain | TheGuardian.com

    Excerpt:
Researchers from the RWTH Aachen University, Germany found that around 1,600 files were currently stored in bitcoin’s blockchain. Of the files least eight were of sexual content, including one thought to be an image of child abuse and two that contain 274 links to child abuse content, 142 of which link to dark web services.

“Our analysis shows that certain content, eg, illegal pornography, can render the mere possession of a blockchain illegal,” the researchers wrote. “Although court rulings do not yet exist, legislative texts from countries such as Germany, the UK, or the USA suggest that illegal content such as [child abuse imagery] can make the blockchain illegal to possess for all users.”

“This especially endangers the multi-billion dollar markets powering cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin.”

While the spending of bitcoin does not necessarily require a copy of the blockchain to facilitate, some processes, such as some mining techniques, require the downloading of the full blockchain or chunks of it.

Yuck. IMO this is just as much of an issue with the nature of the open source concept as it is with blockchain. Open source software is fine in theory...until you need someone to actually support it or be held accountable for issues. (this is why companies like Red Hat are so very necessary)
