This is great - I have a bottle of the Shakespeare Dark but bottled at 20th & North where the old brewery was apparently headquartered at some point.

    Diston saw still exists.

Many knew Henry Diston III who was on the staff at the Franklin Institute about 10 years ago.

Titus, tell us more abut the 20th and North location.
Since the 50's, I knew the Potts ice cream factory on the NW corner, and wonder if it is still in productio

I found this ancient Ale bottle with the attached porcelain cap in the attic of my house. The label is somewhat degraded but still there. The brewer (?) listed is Weisbrod & Hess and the cap says Fairmount Bottling Co 634 N 20th St Philadelphia. When I looked on a late 19th c atlas (Geocities) it appeared that three or so houses on the Potts site were actually used together as a bottling plant. I tried Googling the info on the bottle and label but aside from one tiny mention didn't find anything more about the brewery except that Weisbrod & Hess was actually somewhere else altogether. I figured this was bottle under their name elsewhere but I don't know much about that sort of thing. The bottle itself is gorgeous and I'd say from about 1875.

And one more thing - the bottle is embossed "Wm Gilligan Phila Pa" and I now read that Weisbrod & Hess started in 1882 so the bottle must postdate that so I'm off by about a decade. Their brewery was in Kensington but this was bottled here. And now that I looked back at the original post the bottle I have has the same label as illustrated.

It is not. That building is currently being used for storage AFAIK.

So maybe he "was" the Fairmount Bottling Co on the Potts site. I wonder if anyone has a directory for the 1880s that would place him or someone else at 634 N 20th St?
