Join us for a new round of music classes! The Green Tambourine offers music classes for children Birth - 10 years that encourage, educate and inspire. Located within Studio 34 on Baltimore Ave, we focus on your child's current developmental stage and natural learning styles. All new and prospective students are welcome to a free trial class to see if the classes are a good fit for your little one.
What makes The Green Tambourine's music classes unique? Each week in our Musical Playgroups we feature a "Big Kid Instrument" that each child is welcome to help play. These instruments range include the violin, flute, clarinet, trombone, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, fife, talking drum, as well as instruments from around the world like the berimbeau, udu, ektara and gopichand, to name just a few.
We also focus on creating a well rounded musical experience that incorporates literacy, images and visual art, creative dramatics and movement into each class in a way that relates to your child's developmental stage. Learning this way helps connect with each child in the way they learn best and creates a fun and playful learning environment.
Here's a run down of our classes:
Infants (birth - 10 months) Music is a fantastic way to bond with your child during this stage. Classes are filled with lots of grasping instruments, chants, singing and signing, tickle and wiggle songs and fun props. Classes are held on Thursdays from 11:30 - 12:15 and Sundays from 1:15 - 2:00.
Young Toddlers (10 months - 24 months) With pictures, signing, musical balls, short stories, and lots of instruments, we focus on concepts like animals, counting, body parts and ABCs. These little ones have action packed classes that are fun and educational. Classes are held on Thursdays from 9:30 - 10:15 and Sundays from 10:00 - 10:45.
2&3 year olds - This age group is working with increased motor skills as well as an expanded vocabulary, greater understanding of the sights and sounds around them and the beginning stages of pretend play being developed. Each class includes 5-8 sets of instruments, each paired with an activity and song, as well as puppets, books, scarves and ribbon wands. Classes are held on Thursdays from 10:30 - 11:15 and on Sundays from 12:15 - 1:00.
Introduction to Instruments (4&5 year olds) Focusing on translating songs to instruments, we cover instruments from each musical family. This session will feature the kalimba (thumb piano), djembe (hand drum) and super saxoflute (a build-your-own musical creation that functions as part of the wind family!) Each class is rounded out with songs and additional unique instruments. This class provides the ideal transition from musical exploration in playgroups to starting instrumental study. Classes are on Sundays at 9:00-9:45 am.
Violin and Guitar Group Lessons (6-10 year olds) With elements of Suzuki Method, Traditional Method and lots of fresh, unique approaches to learning instruments, the violin and guitar classes use composition, improvisation, ensemble and solo playing to encourage young musicians to have fun learning about their instrument. With focus on an age appropriate introduction to musical fundamentals such as theory and notation, signing, and rhythm. Violin classes are on Thursdays from 5:00 - 6:00 and on Sundays from 11:00 - 12:00. Guitar is held on Thursdays from 4:00 - 5:00 and Sundays from 2:00 - 3:00.
