Angry I'm angry! Someone stole my urns!!!

Late last spring I bought a pair of classical style cast concrete "stone" urns to flank the front steps of my house. They were large enough and heavy enough that only a person with a truck could have taken them.

The urns were about 3 feet high, and weighed about at least 100 pounds each. Small palms were planted inside. Living in West Philly I considered the fact they might be tempting for someone to steal, so I filled the bottom half with rocks to add about another 10 or 15 pounds of weight.

I bought them on sale at Loews and they cost me about $60 each.

Yesterday I read a neighbor of mine at 44th and Baltimore had his locked apartment burglarized and an expensive bike was stolen.

I'm feeling guilty because I fell into the mind-set that University City was rather "safe" ... why can't I have a pair of heavy stone urns in front of my house?! It's infuriating!

THOU still unravish'd bride of quietness,
Thou foster-child of Silence and slow Time,
Sylvan historian, who canst thus express
A flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme:
What leaf-fringed legend haunts about thy shape
Of deities or mortals, or of both,
In Tempe or the dales of Arcady?
What men or gods are these? What maidens loth?
What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape?
What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy?

Yeah, it happens, unfortunately. I had a package opened on my porch and all the contents stolen while I was home in the afternoon about a year ago. And I live in a high traffic area (like you).

The funny thing was, I have no idea what the guy thought he could do with a video card, a SATA cable, and 4g of ram.

I spend a lot of time gardening and taking care of my plants, so I feel the pain of the urns disappearing. If you want something a good bit cheaper, Ikea has huge terracotta pots for cheap. I plan on putting some stuff in one next year.

Our long term plan is to get some video cameras though. It seems worth the investment.

We have a dark corner just off Baltimore where unfortunately jerks like to pee. I have a project I will probably never around to put up a website called "dontpeeonmygate.com" with stills of the offendors from that outdoor camera I intend to put there.

I'm curious what could be the re-sale value on something like my urns? Ten or twenty bucks apiece?

They were very heavy, could it have been worth it?

    Anyway ... they are gone.

Sheesh ... trying to make my property look pretty. Maybe I'll replace them but this time cement them or chain them or somehow make them more secure.

I believe it's a scene from "The Music Man". Which happens to be running at the Walnut this year, check it out.

Fill it with lead next time, or is that unhealthy to the plants?

Unfortunately the "pee" gate has to be used by tenants of the building to take out trash and recycling. Which makes it even more of a drag when you have to take out your recycling while gingerly avoiding the pee someone has managed to get all over the gate while you work the key. I've even seen times when they got the lock which does not seem physically possible at the height the lock is at. Unless its Yao Ming and Kareem Abdul Jabaar who keeps pissing on my gate.
