    Default Late night safety/public transportation

I'm considering moving to UCity/West Philly and really like the area around 47th and Baltimore. My main concern is that I like to go out in Center City and the only public transportation options after closing time are the 42 bus down Spruce Street and the trolley that goes down Chester. I'm confused as to why the Baltimore Avenue trolley, which serves a denser area, is not 24 hours. It just doesn't make sense. I'm also wondering which would be the safer option: To walk a longer distance down 47th from Spruce to Baltimore, or wait in the trolley station in CC and walk from 47th and Chester.

    All input is appreciated.

If you don't mind a bit of a walk you could just get off at 40th Street Portal and walk up Baltimore Ave. That area is pretty safe, but general street smarts always apply, and it helps if you travel with a friend. I'd also prefer Baltimore Ave or Spruce St over Chester Ave. Chester is residential and quiet at night, there's more activity between Spruce and Baltimore.

Do you have to stay out past closing? Because you could catch the last 34 at 15th and Market shortly before 1:30 a.m. most days, I think. I would much prefer that to walking around after closing having had a drink or two.

That would certainly be the smart thing to do, but it's easier said than done!

If it were me and I were travelling alone, I would take the 42 and call for a UCD Walking Escort (215-898-WALK) while on the bus to meet me at 47th and Spruce. They're available until 3 a.m. but would probably appreciate it if you're not too sloppy drunk.

Sounds like a good idea. They go out to 47th?

personally, i take a cab from CC back to west philly - 15 bucks with tip. but my next choice would be a UCD walking escort from 47th & spruce.

I figured as much. That stretch of 47th is beautiful but I'd imagine closing time is prime witching hour.
