Thumbs up Great new book about West Philadelphia!

Have you guys seen this yet? I've seen the book and it looks great. Many photos of the great architecture plus many homeowners had their homes photographed to show off the great craftsmanship of the olden days. Plus there's churches, university buildings, b&bs, etc.

    Check it out!

I very much look forward to purchasing my copy! The architecture of West Philly is amazing.

That being said, Swinefeld is clearly being modest. Weren't you the author?!

Fantastic! I've been looking forward to this for a while now if it is indeed his book.

I'm going to order several copies.

    Ooh, I'll never tell.

Seriously, I think you'll enjoy it. There's a whole lot on Powelton Village. That was an interesting neighborhood.

It is a beautiful book. Unfortunately it employs "West Philadelphia" as many often do: it stops at 50th Street and the rest does not get coverage. Should have gone as far west as Overbrook and Wynnefield.

There is a growing need for a book on more common, but originally handsome rowhome and twin architecture in the city. You know, the kinds of homes that were cool before decline and aluminum siding, and replacement porch columns, oh and three hundred coats of loud paint over perfectly good brick or stone.

Arcadia Publishing has a number of good books of historic photos of Philly neighborhoods. Their volume on West Philly is subtitled "University City to 52nd ST" which leaves the door open for a book on the western neighborhoods.

I pick them up whenever I run across them; the only one I've seen that's terrible is the volume on Manyunk.

Sorry I couldn't cover a greater area but there had to be a cut-off point because the book would have been too cramped. The publisher was only allotting 192 pages and there is some crowding as is. The working title was going to be "Historic Architecture in University City" but "West Philadelphia" was chosen instead. Maybe the rest of West Philly and Southwest will be the focus of a future book.

My wife delighted me with a copy of this for our anniversary. I think she's getting a little annoyed because I haven't been able to put it down when I should be writing Christmas cards.

I'd run out of superlatives trying to describe my love for this work. Thank you so much for creating what is essentially the definitive work on the neighborhoods I love.

It is a wonderful, delightful and "must-have" book.

    I recommend it.

    The photographs are superb.

The information is carefully researched and from I can tell extremely accurate and insightful.

I bought my copy at Bindlestiff on Baltimore Ave.

The only improvement would have been the inclusion of a interior photograph of a typical Victorian house - in the 2nd Empire style with a mansard roof - on Baltimore Ave near Clark Park. that still has the original leaded stained glass windows, a columned classical fireplace mantel in the center hall, and a gorgeous crystal chandelier in the dining room, and other crystal chandelier (in the "Empire Style") in the front parlor. Interesting, because I believe the owner of this property actually lives in this house, and it hasn't been chopped up into student apartments.
