Default Construction at 30th Street Station?

I looked around for a similar post and didn't see one. Anyone know what the construction is for at 30th Street Station?

I'm hoping it is related to the river redevelopment or U of P's improvements at the old post office. I did a google search, but couldn't find anything.

PennDOT is removing the planters, don't know what the replacement will look like. nothing to do with the IRS across the street

I don't remember what it was in relation to, but I remember a plan that had that space utilized more as a plaza. It had plantings and tables and seating. I figured it was too much to hope for, but I was still hoping. I walk by it almost everyday and not much has happened since they scraped it bare.

It may be apart of the final phase of the conversion of the IRS building....As that street was WAY too wide to cross with destroyed sidewalks on both sides...

    or it could be this:

    COupel things.

Whole are there is really a massive bridge. SO they are repairing the "deck" which runs from Walnut to JFK and from prett much Drexel to the river.

    30th is redoing their "flow"

Brandywine is building landscaping on the South side of Market.

It's not cohesive or one project, just multiple projects at once.

Station Square is under construction. Frankly, it won't be anywhere near as grandiose as originally thought...but it will probably be an improvement.

it should be an improvement, the outer lanes just seemd to confuse people trying to get around the station. if there's a need for more parking, much of the underground garage is unused. it looks like they're just fixing deck as desolate states (and removing the planters) while the city is just going to add a food "kiosk" and some seating (not that there's anything wrong with that). by kiosk, do they mean the small structures you see in parks in other cities?

So for now, they are keeping Market St open, until they fix that circle and bridges around 30th st.

One would think a hotel at that location would be very successful. A couple blocks from the business district,Penn + Drexel nearby, and at the back door of the second busiest train station in the USA.

Why so much hate for this El/Trolley station? It's user friendly and clean IMO.

    It's grafitti'd

It reeks of urine, it's benches are used as a vendor/homeless table.

It was never maintained, and it was poorly constructed.

Look at the welds. I did better welds my first week at it.

Agreed. The 30th St Septa stop looked 20 years old the day it was renovated. It's not even the lack of maintenace, but poor design decisions too.

it's not quite as bad as desolate makes it out to be, for the past couple of years it's been much cleaner...OTOH it IS poorly designed. I think this is one station and entrance that deserves escalators...whether they put them west or east of 30th st. SEPTA did botch this one, a faye moore era project no?

Its more the outside then the inside. Its a wasted entrance next to one of our transportation hubs. Hell look at the sketch up there, even that wants to make something better there.

Hopefully the hotel makes that area shine. and makes the entrance match that shinyness..

    MAYBE THIS WILL HELP.....

Drexel moves east in $22 million campus expansion deal

Drexel University has spent $21.8 million to buy 3.6 acres on the north side of the 3000 block of John F. Kennedy Boulevard, between the school's West Philadelphia campus and 30th Street Station.

The purchase of the land from a group of California investors, currently operated as the Five Star asphalt parking lot, will allow Drexel to add academic classroom and research, and commerical office, retail and residential developments with "24 hour" uses at the school's eastern end, helping link the campus to Center City, university president John Fry told me.

Fry says he's begun approaching developers, including Brandywine Realty Trust, which built the neighboring Cira office tower in the mid-2000s, about possible projects. Drexel trustees are drafting a master plan for the campus that would include the site. He credited former trustee chairman George Ross with the previous purchase of the nearby Evening Bulletin building south of the Five Star purchase. Fry also said he's talking to Amtrak about possible expansion over the nearby train yards.

Drexel is the latest West Philly institution to expand toward Center City. See previous plans by Penn and CHOP.

I sure hope they put some bollards in so that terrorists and elderly drivers from nj are unable to drive onto the sidewalk.

I was nearly killed one morning by a man who drove up over the corner there into the station parking lot.

The police didn't even notice it happened.
