For some reason the best Indian restaurants are usually found in the burbs, and in strip malls near faceless corporate industrial parks. I think this has something to do with first generation Indian immigrants basically avoiding cities.

This topic deserves a magazine article.

Affluent ones. You have enclaves in some cities which tend to be less afluent. But, just like middle class Whites, middle class Desis tend to live in the suburbs. Luckily for us many of them also like to open businesses which means they come into cities to do it But, some of the most interesting places are in the suburbs near the communities (often near the masjid) because that's where Desis go to pick up food for events or themselves. I've heard Rice and Spice in West Philly is one of those grocers that serves good food but I've never been.

I'm perplexed by the lukewarm response to Lovash. This is my second time eating there and the food was excellent. As was the service. They have a cashew Korma that is second to none. They also have a sun-dried tomato based spicy sauce that I could live on. I am a big fan of Indian food and have eaten it all over North America - and I find Lovash to be among the best (Indian Oven in San Francisco gives it a run for its money).

When was your first time? I know they changed ownership or management maybe a year ago (could be longer, not totally sure) and I haven't been since the change... I'll be very happy if they have improved.

My first visit was last October(2011). I was with a party of 6 and everyone was very happy with their meal. In fact, one of the men mentioned it recently which is what brought it to mind, and prompted me to visit again last night with a friend. I was just as happy as was she. What was mysterious was that it was 7:30PM on a Friday night and there were only about 6 tables filled. Perhaps it is new owners and they are having to dig their way out of the bad reputation from prior owners. That would explain it. In any case, it's another BYOB gem that I'm pleased to have found.

I had my birthday there, and if it wasn't for the black dog that was following me that day it would have been fun. But I've eaten their plenty of times, best Indian in the city, hands down.

"Black Dog" - Led Zeppelin. Named for a stray black dog that walked in and out of the studio while recording. "hey hey momma like the way ya groove, gonna maek you sweat gonna make you move"... or something like that.

    Surely that's relevant somehow.

Not that I'm saying it has anything to do with the meat. I love indian Food. Ekta is great.

Since it's "Make Over" the New Delhi restaurant is really attractive, but as someone who has been to India four times, I found their food only a little better than mediocre.

My favorite in west Philly is still Sitar, the breads they make are gorgeous. The place doesn't have much atmosphere though. My other favorite in West Philly is Desi Village.

Speaking of which, I noticed today that Sitar was all boarded up - looks like a fire. Anyone know what the story is there?
