    Question Volunteer/Charity Work?

I do volunteer work related to my job.

We are trying to get more ethnic children involved in the science fields. Interested in such fields while they are young and therefore stick to it while in college and later employment.

I do want to do something else though.

I'm wondering what types of volunteer work you folks do? How much time does it entail...etc...?

I work with homeless youth volunteering with the covenant house - a GREAT organization and we are looking to get more folks to join our young advisory board to help us help the homeless kids of this city. If anyone is game, I can bring you to one of our monthly meetings.

WilReynolds, I'm not ignoring your response. I do appreciate it.

I'm hoping others will chime in with other comments too.

    Thanks, again!

I'm a Red Cross volunteer. I'm the nice lady who gives you juice and cookies once you give it up.

I'm very active in East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association as a board member. I also help out with the feline spaying clinics @ the PSPCA.

The ol' man, a retired CPA, does free tax returns via the Campaign for Working Families.

And our daughter is a volunteer @ Planned Parenthood.

Since being laid off (before I always said "if I only had the time") I signed up to volunteer at a senior center/food pantry. I have just started.

LOL, but you know how I feel about housecats!

    Planned Parenthood is interesting though.

Sorry about your being laid off.

Senior citizen food pantry probably can use a lot of help on several levels.

    Thanks, folks!

I took the tree-tender course from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and help plant trees (mostly UC Green, but I also recently helped out in South Philly).

I also canvass and phone bank for political candidates (currently doing some volunteer work for Brett Mandel).
Welcome to Philadelphia. Here's how you can help us make our great city even better:

    * Write to your elected officials
    * Report suspicious activity to the police department
    * Is there an abandoned/nuisance property in your neighborhood? See if it is tax delinquent. If so, maybe you can force it to go to sheriff's sale.

"No one wanted to be mayor of Philadelphia. It was a thankless job, which for the first 56 years offered an annual salary of zero. In 1745, two men turned down the position and instead accepted large fines. In 1747, Anthony Morris fled to Bucks County to hide and thus avoid notification of his election. After Morris’s disappearance, a new election was held, and William Atwood was re-elected."

If you haven't found anything that interested you yet, I am a member of the Friends of the Wissahickon. I volunteer to do trail restorations and park clean up. It's fun, gets you outdoors and exercise too!
