Default City passes on .Philly domain

I know no one cars, but it is interesting:

City Passes on “.Philly” Domain. A few major cities—including New York—have applied for new domain names now that you can end a web address in pretty much “.anything.” Philadelphia’s Chief Innovation Officer Adel Ebeid says that the city passed on the opportunity to register “.Philly.” He cited a hefty price tag and lack of competition for the domain as reasons Philly can do without the new web address for now

$185,000 is steep, especially for a lort of cities right now, so I can see why Philly passed, but its out there if you got the cash.

It should be done. I remember when one of the car companies didn't buy their domain because the thought the internet was trivial. They ended up buying it from a 9 year old for millions.

On a structural side, it is also needed. Put every damn city department under the same website with the same template, hierarchy, etc. to streamline efficiency. Hell, the city has already spent millions on bloated contracts for sites that don't even work-so $185k seems like a lot, is a lot, but a drop in the bucket with all things considered.

Maybe the city's banking on .phila still being available in a few years, after Kraft Foods or some soft pretzel manufacturer buys .philly for a pretty penny.

For example: the Mural Arts Program gets eight times as much every year.

At least they are keeping an eye on it and they have first rights to overturn someone bid....

But lets see where this .anything goes first....Google needs to make it popular before I buy into it.
