Flash Drives and Windows 98

No it totally takes 98 out of the equation. You pull the drive out of the old computer, connect to the adapter, then connect to the XP machine via USB. It shows up as a mass storage device which XP handles just fine. It's the same as the case you mention, but just loose wires instead of a case--perfectly suitable for quick transfer jobs like this.

Oh, duh. Didn't have my coffee yet. This is a pretty cool thing that I didn't know existed. I always end up buying cases since they tend to disappear from friends always 'borrowing' them.

where to start,

There are no Network card feature,
No Network,
no e-mail.

New ... software would have to be Win98 compatible.

CD is Read only,

Well, not sure whether you're using Win98 vs Win98SE,
but on Win98Se, I've used the generic sandisk drivers to get USB working with 8G Sandisk drive,
That particular Win98se machine finally died, about 2 months ago, so I don't have the drivers,

IIRC I got the generic drivers from searching on CNET or driverguide,
run 2 virus scanning programs to be saf,e, copied to 1.44 floppy, installed, worked fine.
