Default Smash-and-Grab robbery at the King of Prussia Mall

Smash-and-grab jewelry theft at King of Prussia Mall | 6abc.com

Upper Merion Police say it happened just before 3:00 p.m. at Tourneau Inc., a fine watch store located in the King of Prussia Plaza.

Police say three men walked into the store and threatened the security guard with a small sledge hammer.

One man then used the hammer to smash the glass display cases. The other two removed numerous watches from the cases. All three then fled.
Police say the robbery lasted less than 20 seconds.

No one was hurt. The amount of merchandise stolen has not yet been determined.

I'd put in fakes in the display cases and have the real ones under lock and key in the back to be shown to a customer at his/her request.

Actually, that's not a bad idea, though I doubt the watch makers would like somebody making very nice counterfeit imitatations of their watches regardless of the reason.

I could picture the look on the thief's face when he tries to sell it. "Uh, how much will you give me for this really nice Rolex?" "About $5. It's made of plated pot metal, the stones are glass, and it has a Chinese movement."

Article says it happened last summer, too. Sounds like they need better security.
Or maybe it's like a bank, in that it's too expensive to hire real guards, and one depends on massive insurance?

Can't. Fakes are illegal, period. This is like saying the jewelry store should have all fake diamonds in the case and only show real ones to buyers. That's not how the sizzle of those kind of sales works.

I am surprised their insurance carrier doesn't require this.

Don't most of the high end jewelery stores there have security guards to prevent this? I think some of the clothing stores do too.
