Default Pat Robertson says Haitians made pact w/ the DEVIL

Yea, because only nations in league w/ Satan suffer natural disasters.

YouTube - Robertson: Haiti had pact with devil

I love how when he says they made a pact with the devil, he's nodding and says "It's true!", just to confirm. And people give these humps $$$.

No one could ever defeat the French without the help of Satan.

Its only right & just that 200odd years later they'd pay the price, that God should smite them for their blasphemy.

Nobody except those nice German boys, of course.

More to the point, how could these upstart savages possibly defeat a European power without Demonic Intervention. Obvious, eh?

Funny thing is, it was a jewel when the French ran the place. Look at it ever since.

Maybe this article is what Pat Robertson was referring to. If so, it makes sense:

Its worth pointing out that "Napoleon the Third" wasn't even born yet.

Oh, so you've traveled through time to tell us that?

I'm guessing that sailors must have loved visiting there...oh wait, they didn't, because it was poor, smelly, and full of plague and yellow fever.

And that website you linked to was worth a laugh, I like the natural cancer cure ads, it really adds to the authenticity of lunacy.

No, I don't time travel but I do study history, and always have.

In the 1700s, Haiti supplied 50% of all Europe's sugar. They were doing so well they were exporting considerably. They were known as the breadbasket of the Caribbean.

But that was when the French ran the place. Ever since 1802, when the French were slaughtered, raped and (French women and children) sold into slavery by those involved in the slave rebellion in Haiti, it has been as you see it today. The US has foolishly come to their rescue several times since, including in 1914, only for the country to descend into insanity, poverty and superstition again and again.

Oh, and here is a very interesting 2002 video about life in Haiti. Make sure you didn't have dinner yet:

YouTube - Raboteau Revolt

Trust me, these are not the kinds of people you want to help, except maybe with birth control.

I don't shock easily, but I am utterly shocked and revolted that you would post such an article. It's quite beyond the pale of civilized and intelligent discussion.

If it's true, that's all that matters. Think of me as similar to Simon Cowell: I say the truth, people boo, but in the end, they have to admit I was right.

Not to get too far off topic, but it actually was quite a wealthy colony at the time due to trade in coffee, sugar, and indigo. Some economists believe it was the wealthiest place in the Americas in the late 18th century. How it came to be and has remained so poor, even relative to other Caribbean nations, is a bit of a puzzle. Part of the answer might be that after the slave revolt, the US and other nations isolated Haiti politically and didn't trade with them.

The timing of this earthquake is particularly tragic because Haiti was perhaps coming around a bit, and was one of the only Caribbean nations experiencing steady economic growth for the past few years. This will set them back.

It's not a puzzle at all.

Who ran Haiti when it was a properous colony? Who runs it now?

There is your answer.

Fair enough, but like you said, the rest of the world traded with them when the French ran it. Other nations were scared of having their own slave revolts, so a good deal of the lost trade was imposed externally.

No, I think you are delusional and are repeating a slander of almost unbelievable callousness and ignorance. You should be ashamed for even suggesting such a thing. If you are joking and trolling, it is extreme bad taste. If you are serious, then you are simply unworthy of engaging in reasonable discussion and you disgust me.

The French also ran Vietnam.

Out of all the colonial powers, why is it that Portugal came out unscathed by it... except for Angola (but that was a civil war, Portugal really didn't have much to do with it)..

And? It was built on the backs of slaves. That kind of dims the achievements. But I'm obviously dealing with someone who feels that slavery is a good thing, so logic isn't really going to work with you.

Yes the Portuguese just sold slaves to other people, tucked the money in their purses, then washed their hands of colonial problems. All very tidy, wasn't it?

Well they were the first to leave Europe and check out other countries and realized up-front they weren't in the business to do "God's work".

That was the marketing plan that Spain used, then the British copied it... which then turned into a convienent way of booting far-right Puritanical Christian nutbags off the British Isles (America) and later as a prison-population control measure (Australia).
