Although I am appalled that parents would not seek medical care for an ill child, it's not clear to me from the articles in the Inquirer that this neglect was deliberate.

One of the articles states:

The Schaibles work as teachers at their fundamentalist church, First Century Gospel Church in Northeast Philadelphia. They quit school after the ninth grade.

I'm not sure if this means that the Schaibles quit school after ninth grade or if their students quit after ninth grade. If they are the ones who quit after ninth grade, I wouldn't want them teaching my children.

Maybe these are just uneducated, ignorant people whose lack of education made them susceptible to erroneous beliefs. Maybe they really did think the child had only a cold and would get better. Perhaps that's why the charge is involuntary manslaughter.

The article also states that they have several other children. I hope they will be better cared for than the poor unfortunate one who died.

As a non-parent, I am tempted to advocate for child-rearing licenses. Prove to the state that you are capable of raising a child before you're allowed to have one. PACCA vetted me before I was allowed to adopt a cat. Shouldn't standards for human care be as rigorous as those for companion animals? At the very least, teach school students the minimum requirements for taking care of children, and I guess it will have to be done before ninth grade, based on this case.

You need a license to drive a car or braid peoples' hair but any dink & twat can make a human. It boggles the mind! But the alternative is eugenics, and until the whole Illuminati depopulation thing goes down, we're not going to be able to get people to agree to that.

It is charged as manslaughter because they did not intend for their child to die, but could have reasonably concluded that the result might follow from their actions.

You'd be surprised how many people are not allowed to take their babies home from the hospital....and surprised by how many are allowed to.

THEY did.

There was a family from the same church a while back whose son broke his leg. They didn't even set the bone. They prayed over it for God to heal the broken bone. That's not ignorance, or an erroneous belief. It's a complete and total break from reality and criminally negligent.[/QUOTE]

I just looked at the church's website:

Every worldly plan for avenging injustices, seeking medical help or drugs, accepting laid-up pension money, Social Security payments, purchasing insurance coverage, playing lotteries, buying protection devices (or any other false places of trust), are all tests in life to reveal what is in our heart, and to see if we are willing to believe and trust God. So much for being charitable and trying to give them the benefit of the doubt - they're whack jobs and deserve to be prosecuted for allowing a child to die for lack of medical care. I hope the rest of their children are removed to foster care, and that the other members of the church are investigated as well. I certainly believe in freedom of religion, but I think the state has a duty to step in to protect these children. It's one thing for adults to choose a crazy lifestyle, but children in our society shouldn't be subjected to it.

So much of modern medicine only works because researchers have taken evolution seriously. So if Christians seriously reject Darwinian science, and want to avoid hypocricy, they must reject medical treatment.

Most of them, however, want it both ways so they don't all earn Darwin awards.

Anybody can lodge a tax complaint at this church to get the IRS to attend their services (best to time it during election season) to see what that church has to say about politics.

I would see about getting the church's tax-exempt status yanked to get their child-endangering view of Christianity nipped in the bud.

When I worked at my friend's dad's pool store, I refused to accept a Archdiocesan credit card for a new pool filter pump, a bucket of chlorine and two goggles out of principle.

Actually this IRS tactic is way older than you are. It was a popular way in the 70s to go after left-leaning community non-profits basically masquerading as GOTV drives... for only one candidate.

And the telethon churches of the 1980s.

Now when pols show up at churches the preacher, aldermen and the pol himself have to step on tiptoes if they want to keep their tax exemption. Most of the time when the tax exemption gets stripped and the public embarrassment pops up over the church, it meets its fiscal demise rather quick.

I've read through most of the stuff on their website. Disgusting, but I don't see any mention of anything political at all. They say to avoid banks and put your money in God's trust, whatever that means; no insurance, no property ownership, no labor unions, no medical treatment or 'pills', no tv watching, no Social Security or pensions. Oh, they also have mission churches in Ghana and Nigeria pushing their faith healing in Africa. Lots of talk of Satan and temptations in the world.

Extreme fundamentalist stuff, but, at least on the web, no political suggestions or affiliations.

One can only hope that social services will thoroughly investigate the treatment of the children involved in the church and act in their best interest.
