Default 15th & Carpenter: Train Shed

On July 5, 2012, L&I posted an "imminently dangerous" notice on the train shed at 15th and Carpenter. The specific aspects needing immediate attention were listed as: "entire exterior of building, and roof." The current owners apparently have not put much effort into maintenance. But even with the detiorating condition of the building, many people would consider rehabiliation of the train shed to be a desirable way to anchor redevelopment at the NW corner of Broad and Washington.

I've always thought it the perfect location for a brew pub plus some sort of other retail. Something like the Chelsea Market would be cool, but not so sure we could support that.

Several years back that site was proposed for a House of Blues, but those plans, as well as plans for yet another HoB in CC, came to naught.

HoB was proposed for the property between 16th and 17th on Washington, what is now C&R Building Supply. Not the train building.

I'm afraid we're seeing demolition by neglect going on with this property. There are trees growing out near the roof causing structural issues. My wife was walking home from work two weeks ago when a section of brick fell from above. Fortunately no on was injured, but nature is reclaiming this property and hopefully the owners will address these issues as well as put it to better use soon.

    Isn't demo by neglect illegal?

No more illegal than riding dirtbikes down city streets or not paying property taxes.

    (i.e., enforcement is non-existent)

Did your wife call 911? When you see something like that please call it in.

Went by today, repair work is being performed to the missing chunk. At least it's getting taken care of, hopefully they can shore up the whole structure someday.

Amazing. Not only has some of the brickwork been repaired, but they are also power-washing the 15th Street facade as I write. The improvement is pretty striking.

Didn't President Lincoln's body rest in the shed when it traveled by train through Philadelphia? That would make it historic (to me anyway) and it should be preserved!

Not sure that specific structure was there in 1865. I have the impression that the current structure was built in the 1880s -- I haven't verified that, though.

There was train service at that location at least since 1836. The train shed that you see today was built in 1878. See this wikipedia entry:
Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad Freight Shed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The wikipedia entry contains a link to the PDF file of the paperwork related to placing the structure on the National Register of Historic Places. That PDF file includes some good photos of the interior of the train shed.

Default Northwest Corner Broad Street and Washington Avenue:10/5/1914

This was the old passenger station now long gone, not the building on 15th.
I don't think this was used for passengers after the broad street station was built and after PRR took over.
