Actual event would be.
Scene: Monk's, 16th and Spruce. A blustery Saturday night in November, about 11:45.]
Narberth Guy: Honey, last train leaves soon. Should we run to catch it, or do you think we can afford $15 for a cab home?
24th and South Guy: Let's order some more $15 beers first.
Narberth guy: Ok. Heck, maybe I'll spend an extra $5 and get Uber Cab to run me home in a town car. Let's get another round!

Narberth Guy: Honey, last train leaves soon. I wish we could hang out until 2 a.m. and get wasted with our friends.
Girlfriend: I know, sweety. It never gets old. But the babysitter leaves at 12.
Narberth Guy: Damn. I'd love to keep drinking.
[overheard from inside Monk's]
24th and South Guy: bartender, can i get another one!?
Narberth guy: aw shucks, honey. let's go. i have to work tomorrow morning, and junior is going to get up soon.
THE END
Ok, two beers at Monks.
Let's see, $150,000 premium to live in the city, divided by $30/cab ride. That's 5,000 cab rides to make up the difference.
One thing I find strange in these discussions is that the animosity frequently displayed toward the suburbs related to them being "isolated" isn't directed toward those who live in East Falls or Manayunk, which, essentially, are just about as far away as Narberth or Merion.
"I am a <banned> liar." -Mr.Brightside
Well, both are less isolated than Narberth.
Narberth is a town in the suburbs, Both EF and Manayunk more or less flow directly into the rest of the city and surrounding neighborhoods, even if there are "breaks" like a highway overpass. Narberth is buffered from the city by suburban areas and then relatively suburban city neighborhoods.
Manayunk and EF are serviced by (relatively) frequent bus lines in addition to trains and a bike/ped path that goes straight to CC.
Both are mostly comprised of rowhomes and more urban in character than Narberth as a whole. Manayunk is almost all rowhomes, as is the majority (at least in population, if not land area) of EF. I don't seem much attached housing in Narberth.
I'm not knocking the place, I like Narberth and you're point is not totally invalid. I probably would have compared to Fox Chase though.
I think the 150k premium is also selective, but I'll have to look at more recent property trends before commenting.
There's no animosity; I don't see why you're getting so defensive. You had argued that your access to the city would be almost as good in some suburbs as it is in the city itself, and a few people in this discussion just pointed out that that isn't true. You've also moved the goal posts a bit in the suburbs' favor: at first, it was regional rail that was going to bring all this easy access, and now we're talking about $15, then $30 cab rides.
Manayunk and EF are better if you want a happy medium between urban (rowhomes, street life) and suburban (safety, more square footage for your $$$) living, but I'm sure you know that already. And if you're worried about schools, Dobson and Cook–Wiss are wonderful but nothing beats the LMSD. Again, pretty common knowledge. I don't think any of these communities warrant animosity; I just think the Main Line is not without its own disadvantages, and you shouldn't neglect them.
All good points.
Great, now I need to add Fox Chase as another option besides the city and main line....thanks. :PI'm not knocking the place, I like Narberth and you're point is not totally invalid. I probably would have compared to Fox Chase though.
$700k row home on South previously discussedI think the 150k premium is also selective, but I'll have to look at more recent property trends before commenting.

Not defensive at all. But you must admit, there's an anti-suburb slant to this site. (Something I've been guilty of myself)
Well, that was in response to the hypothetical late night at Monks. Something I really don't do that often these days as dramatized by Torts which was probably closer to my reality. And my arguments are halfway advocating for the devil. I'm going through a decision making process and countering what other people post because I'm trying to get more comments and info. I would say I'm pretty much torn 50-50 which way I want to go at this point. You had argued that your access to the city would be almost as good in some suburbs as it is in the city itself, and a few people in this discussion just pointed out that that isn't true. I hope not to, so please keep them coming if any have not yet been mentioned.I just think the Main Line is not without its own disadvantages, and you shouldn't neglect them.
Once again, thanks for the imput to all.
