They are doing this without zoning variances or permits. I am sure we can make sure some changes happen. Right now it just screams, "Drug dealers shop here."
i thought the same thing that it's a shame they spent all that money. Maybe the other areas of town didn't care.

I have two predictions:
1) It will be more difficult than most anticipate to obtain actual enforcement on their violations.
2) This place will do a gangbusters level of business and be a relative success.
and/or 3) It's a drug front. Hence the bullet proof plexiglass.

Neighbors here put a lot of time and effort into eliminating a drug front at that location and at the one next door. Another just will not be tolerated.
These people are probably not expecting the level of pushback that they will receive - they have neighbors who openly confronted drug dealers in court and will not stand down. Our neighborhood has made a lot of progress in the last few years and we won't tolerate steps backward. We are united and we are vocal.
This is all Pub and Kitchens fault lol. Please don't get me started.

I'm beginning to think the Scalones are only 3 to 4 feet tall.
Where do all the crazy, Machiavellian NIMBY's in this neighborhood go when **** like this goes down?
addendum (edit): wow, maybe there really is something to sychronicity
I actually hope they do do well, but only after they change out those ridiculous awnings and un-bulletproof themselves from us, the customers they purport to serve.
In fact this is a letter several nearby neighbors have been putting together today. I have no doubt it will be signed by the majority within a 2-block radius in every direction:
Dear New Corner Store Owners:
We, your neighbors and potential customers at 20th & Carpenter Streets, would like to welcome you to our block. We are very happy to see a new business in that location, and we hope it will serve us well and thrive.
However, we are not very pleased with what we have seen so far. The style of your new store appears to belong somewhere else, not here. We hope you will think again and quickly come up with a redesign more appropriate for our neighborhood.
For example, the bulletproof security gates outside and plexiglass inside do not convey that you are friendly or want to welcome us. Your new awnings are suggestive of low-quality and/or unhealthy merchandise. In general, the message your store conveys is very off-putting to us.
Therefore, unless and until you make changes, we will be inclined to continue shopping at Kim Van at 22nd & Christian Streets, and the new café scheduled to re-open soon at 19th & Christian. We prefer to spend our money at businesses that demonstrate a regard for their neighbors and the surrounding community.
Signed,

Maybe I'm missing something? I don't see a reason to think this is anything more than just a small business started by someone used to neighborhoods where there are no standards. If it were a drug front, they probably would have spell-checked the awning.
Assuming the worst will just make dealing with them more unpleasant.
We have fought drug fronts in that location and others nearby as well. If a store opens with a bulletproof floor, bulletproof plexiglass interior, and is offering items for sale friendly to the drug trade, I am going to assume at the very least that is friendly to the neighborhood drug trade that we are trying to stamp out. I've lived here too long to welcome a 'ghetto' store to the neighborhood.
Agreed. Those kinds of places are hang outs for the cornerboy dealers. When the owners are cloistered behind their bulletproof glass and no locals want to come around then its a prime corner for dealers. Nobody will bother them, and the stores do their business from the kids buying sodas, chips, and unhealthy prepared foods and whatever else the dealers and their customers need.
