Default A dearth of hobgoblins / free candy

So once again I had twice as much candy as hobgoblins.

I put the surplus in a clear plastic bag and hung it over my front doorknob. I sure hope it's gone in the morning. Mostly Reese's cups, a few Kitkats.

    I know
I always buy a crapload of candy, hoping that maybe THIS year might be different, and there will be more than 5 kids showing up at our door, but.....no....oh, well.

We will enjoy eating it, even though I shouldn't. I am gonna take some to work, too, and my coworkers are gonna be pissed off at me, once again....but they sure enjoy the junk anyhow:/

You know, once upon a time, when I was a little one living in South Philly (what is now called Pennsport) we used to get bags full of candy, and I mean those big paper bags....and pillowcases full, the sidewalks were full of kids getting 'treats', and a lot of parents used to sit outside and chat, look at all the kids' costumes.....whatever happened to those days?

    Or am I imagining things?

I think a lot of the new residents of our neighborhood are childless / child-free or have very young children who probably are better off elsewhere on Halloween. Although I did see Young Master Gingivitis.

The bag o' treats was gone this morning. We're on the route to Chester Arthur, which may have had something to do with it.....

I was a little surprised by the demographics of tricker treaters as I walked up 23rd through Fitler Square a little after 8pm. All but a few of the several dozen kids and parents I saw north of South St were African-American.

We had an OK evening- maybe a dozen doorbell rings and 40 kids in total. Mind you, I live on a tiny, tiny street and only one other house was giving out candy.

I have to admit I head uptown with my trio. There is always more walking involved to get particpants if we stay locally. If I head up to Fitler and delancey we get an intense dose for 45 minutes and all small people are happy. However I will note that this year I noticed way more open doors and lights on in our neighborhhod so perhaps next year we will stay local....

    Default Thank you, Neighbors!!!

Our group walks up the 1900 Pemberton to 21st Street; then head down Bainbridge to 18th; and then up the 1800 block of Pemberton back to where we started. It was terrific!!!

We got about three times as many trick-or-treaters as last year. Probably about 50 or so in total.

Note to self: Make regular post-holiday pilgrimage to South Square Market on the way home from work in the morning to stock up on marshmallow peeps and other candy at slashed prices.
