G-Ho is getting a new bar, from the people who brought you Memphis Taproom and Local 44. A bar a year ain't bad, Leigh and Brendan!
It's at the corner of Grays Ferry and Catherine and is poised to open by early September if all goes well. So they have a website you can sign up for to get the news as it happens:
Four corners there--not sure which one it's going to be on.
technically there's only two corners, one of which is the yello bar, the other is an empty lot (AFAIK). the other side is the Naval Home wall. IMO, either they are building across from the yello bar, taking over the yello bar, or are going in at Christian and got the streets mixed up.
Aha. This would explain a rumor I heard. I suspect Yello'Bar is selling. If that's the case, I have mixed feelings. Very sad to lose our Yello'Bar friends, but happy to hear a new highly successful business is coming in.
yello bar wasn't that great - the food was yucky, the bartender unattentive and unconcerned, the patrons nasty unless you were just like them and the drinks substandard and over priced.
"I hope their goal isn't to increase foot traffic. I live by there and I don't want to deal with the noise, litter, and drugs that accompany those establishments. I prefer empty bars. In fact, I'd rather see it lay fallow."

I don't think the people who opposed the Sidecar (and before that, Tria) tend to call the neighborhood G-Ho. That's a newcomer's name.
wow... i'm a little sad to see yello'bar go, but looking forward to the new establishment. i hope they'll stay on track with a september opening, as we'll definitely miss the foot traffic in the area for now.
Actually it's a Phillybogger's name for it. Does anyone remember the name of the poster that came up with it? I love it.
You would, being a realtor and all.
It was a transplant from central Pennsylvania named Brad Maule, who went by the name of giovanni_sasso here. I once literally throttled him (or pantomimed the action) at a community meeting for saddling our neighborhood with a moniker only hipsters and realtors could love. To me, it sounds too much like, "Gee, 'ho -- how much do you charge for a quickie?"
Of course, now that Brad is a fixture of the establishment with PhillySkyline and all, he moved to Fishtown, leaving the re-named neighborhood behind. In a few years, newcomers will have to have it explained to them. "You see, there used to be this hospital...."
I love it because it's a cute name to me. I am actually a person too.
Similarly here in Fishtown, the neigborhood boundaries are a bit undefined in some areas and people new to the area have started called it "Port Fishington", which has angered some natives. People need to get over themselves. It's a tiny dot on a map and everyone comes from one of them.

I would argue that the people most in need of getting over themselves are the newcomers who don't at least take some time to get to know their neighborhoods before they start making them over in their image. (I say that as one who didn't do a thing except plant flowers and help organize block parties for the first five years of residence here.)
Learn WHAT about their neighborhoods? I say this as someone who had to tear down various Sanford & Son structures on her property and get a dumpster to clear the crap out of my yard.
When someone moves to my hometown, we bring them baked goods, invite them to BBQs and try to make them feel welcome because new blood is what keeps a neighborhood alive. That's clearly not the Philly way though. Maybe it should be.

As Queen of Fishtown aren't they required to bring you gifts or at least genuflect in your presence
Anyhoo, looks like you just got a G-ho welcome and it's just the forum, sheesh.

It's my standard welcome for anyone who calls SWCC "G-Ho." In real life, I once organized a backyard barbecue so that the neighbors could meet the couple who was buying our house. And I'm sure Brooke is a very nice person in real life, as I like to think I am. The G-Ho business just gets on my last nerve.
