This is item 2 on the agenda tomorrow:
June Zoning Committee Meeting | SOSNA | South of South Neighborhood Association
922 South 20th Street - 2nd Presentation - Erection of additions and decks to existing three-family dwelling and eat-in/take-out restaurant.
I hope folks will come out and support May's efforts to bring the neighborhood a great new eating spot. I just got a glimpse of her revised plans and they look very nice.
I talked to her about the spot across from the SOSNA bldg and she said its going to be a panini/coffee shop w/ outside seating type place
Where exactly is this other place?
Yes.
922 S 20th.
To be precise, it's the now-blighted, but soon-to-be-rehabilitated (by May, who recently bought it) former "drug" store you can see immediately to the right in this pic here at the NW corner of 20th & Carpenter:
Isn't it refreshing to know that not everyone thinks putting in brand new shiny blight to replace the old is the best way to go?
so mays putting up a place next to the sadwich shop? hopefully she can convince them to change the decor as a fellow business owner in neighborhood.
however, if they talked to the guy at kim van's, i think he was robbed at gun point so i can't hate on them for wanting the bullet proof glass
Yup. Hopefully. Hopefully she can convince them to remove the steel door they installed jutting out over onto her property too. So far she hasn't though. But neighbors are rallying around May to help her communicate with them about stuff like, you know, property rights and laws and junk.
Hugh was held up?! That's horrible!! When?? Is he OK?
a few months ago....he has steel doors installed so does even side car
Welp, if May doesn't need my help with her signage maybe the corner store will take me up on it should they chose to change their glowing awnings.
Glad to hear she's moving forward soon though!
Ah yes I think I did hear about that back then. I believe I heard the idiot was caught too.
As far as the steel doors, I have no qualms about them per se. But some could definitely look better than others. I'm sure you'd agree that Sidecar's window gates are a cut above most in the design department. And even Kim Van's gates have an open strip across them, giving them a friendlier appearance. In fact I probably shouldn't compare Philly to NYC (at the risk of inviting the usual trolls) but from what I understand, solid gates are illegal there. But nobody's saying security gates aren't wise - I have some (nice-looking, decorative) ones on my own house.
Funny you should mention that, I was just getting ready to send you a PM to suggest that you come to tomorrow night's SOSNA Zoning meeting and introduce yourself (and your offer) to May. The plans I saw did not include any signage details, and I don't think she's gotten that far yet.
what do the plans you saw look like? i won't be able to make a mtg....and is this place going to be a PHO place only?
you seem to be in the know on what's happening in the area, do you know what is happening at 21st and christian? they did a great rehab of that property on the corner and it looks like it would be a commercial space on the first floor but nothing has happened in months on that front
I believe the plans will be linked to the SOSNA site at some point, perhaps after the meeting. Not sure I can post what I saw, but it was a nice basic rendering of the new structure she plans to put there.
Meanwhile, initially May told me "Breakfast + Pho (for lunch & dinner)" but she also seems to be wide open to other suggestions within that realm too.
I believe that is planned to be a high-end sandwich shop. I know they've been taking forever but I don't think anything's stalled. In fact when I walked by there myself on Saturday all the doors were open and even though I couldn't see much, I could hear the lovely sounds of power saws and nail guns.
