Default COMMUNITY MEETING NOTICES: SOSNA, park, etc.

Might as well replicate this thread, too. I thought I'd mention that Shiloh Baptist Church, 2040 Christian Street, will be doing its congregational/neighborhood party again this year, assuming everyone signs on to the permit. I believe they'll be doing it in partnership with St. Charles Borromeo again. This year, the residents of the 2000 block of Christian Street are being invited to set up flea market tables in front of their homes if they desire.

    Important notes about the process:
    • Filled trash bags can be placed at the corner of your block and will be picked up throughout the day.
    • There are trucks that spray down cleaned blocks at the end of the day, but PMBC representatives cannot guarantee that every block will get sprayed down.
    • You can encourage cars on your block to move during the clean up by either
    • A) stopping by the SOSNA office to pick up "STREET CLEANING" temporary parking signs. SOSNA has a limited supply of the STREET CLEANING signs, but is trying to obtain more.
    • B) obtaining a $20 "Block Party" permit from the Streets Department to close off the block for parking during the day. Information on obtaining these permits can be found here: www.phila.gov/streets/block_party.html

Default Historic Christian Steet YMCA Event

This just in from the Christian Street Y:

The Historic Christian Street YMCA, a branch of the YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity, will hold its Annual Founder’s Day Banquet and fundraising event, including its celebrated Service Award Ceremony on Thursday, November 5, 2009, starting at 5:30 PM at our 17th & Christian Street location. As in previous years, our theme for this year’s event is our ongoing commitment to Building Strong Kids, Strong Families, and a Strong Community. Our focus is to develop programs that are high quality and promote the development of all people. Currently, over3100 individuals in the greater South Philadelphia community and South West Center City neighborhoods benefit from the Christian Street YMCA’s innovative programs. These programs nurture children and develop healthy spirits, minds, and bodies for all.

…………. We are very pleased that Sulaiman W. Rahman, founder of Urban Philly Professional Network and CEO of UrbanPhilly.com, has agreed to be our keynote speaker.

This year’s Strong Community award will be presented to John A. Dawkins III, President and CEO of Jo-Dan Enterprises/McDonald’s Licensee, for his leadership in our community and the City of Philadelphia at large, as well as his ongoing commitment on behalf of the Historic Christian Street YMCA.
The letter indicates that there will also be presentations of a Strong Kids Award, and a Strong Family Award.

The letter goes on to say that music will be provided by Sam Lackey, and entertainment by Phresh Select, a modern dance group. This is a fund raiser for the benefit of the various children programs and to defray those costs for folks who could otherwise not have their children participate. Dinner tickets are $65/pp. The event is catered by Sadies Country Gourmet and I can attest that her food is terrific.

Members of the community are invited to attend this very worthwhile event. If you are interested, call 215-735-5800 and make your reservation.
