    Default Irene's Damage

I heard that Irene blew off a roof at Artists' Village at 17th & Bainbridge/Fitzwater - haven't been by there to check it out. Any other damage in the neighborhood? One of my neighbors had 4" water in the basement - she said it just seeped out of the ground (soaked ground or sewer related?).

Rodman street , between 17th and 18th ... one of the street trees is out of the ground and leaning on the opposite side of the street.

My satellite dish is off the roof and in my backyard.

All things considered, we were lucky.

Appears we lost 4 trees (and counting?) at Julian Abele Park.

Four young trees at the park? Were they rotted? A fungal disease wouldn't open them to this type of wind damage, I don't think.

The park trees are falling over, they did not snap or break.

I wonder if we could put them back in place and (o heresy of heresies) stake them for a couple of years...

Is Artists' Village a PHA property?

    Yes.

I don't know very much about trees but I do wonder if they fell over more readily due to that fact. (Perhaps their roots are not as established/robust as they would have been otherwise? Just speculation though - again, I know little to nothing about trees.)

From what I understand, the dense leafiness would also have had something to do with it. (The trees were overdue for some pruning so the tops were probably acting more like sails than they should have been.)

I wonder if it might be time to cut our losses now, rather than work super-hard to keep permanently diseased trees alive as long as possible.

No, it's not PHA. It is subsidized, like Sec.8, for a definite time period. When this time period ends, it will probably be thoroughly renovated and converted into plain rental apartments w/parking! By the way, I walked by there this morning and part of the roof did come off in the South building by Fitzwater Street. The debris was still lying around.

That's interesting, do you know when the subsidized time period ends?

At the time, they took 2 empty, dilapidated and neglected research buildings (formerly CHOP) and transformed them into subsidized apartments (SOSNA was a partner in this). It played a great part in the neighborhood transformation toward positive development at the time. I'll try and find out when the subsidized arrangement is over, and will post it here.

Who is responsible for removing remnants of a tree that broke as a result of Irene and was dragged to the sidewalk of an adjacent street?
