For starters, the market will have one Amish farming family. We're told they will sell produce, flowers, and maybe dairy.

    Default Just in from SOSNA...

From: South of South Neighborhood Association
    Sent: Tuesday, June 22, 2010 2:34 PM
Subject: [SOSNA e-News] NEW Farmer's Market at JULIAN ABELE PARK Starting This FRIDAY, 3-7 PM!!

    Dear neighbors:

The Friends of Julian Abele Park and SOSNA are very pleased to announce a new FARMER'S MARKET in our neighborhood!

The market will take place at Julian Abele Park (22nd and Carpenter Streets) EVERY FRIDAY, starting THIS FRIDAY, JUNE 25, from 3-7 PM.

We all know that getting a market for our neighborhood is long overdue. South of South Street is the beginning of what the First Lady and others would call a Food Desert - a district with little or no access to foods needed to have a healthy and nutritious diet. That's why we are so excited to welcome Jacob and Emma Beiler, an Amish couple directly from Lancaster County PA.

The Beiler's will be selling a wide variety of produce, flowers, baked good, and some dairy. Their product list will likely change from week-to-week. So we're working with Jacob to get an advanced list of the products for sale each week, and that list will be posted on the website for Julian Abele Park - www.julianabelepark.org

The Beilers accept FNMP (Farmers Market Nutrition Programs) vouchers!

PLEASE COME OUT AND SUPPORT THIS NEW MARKET!!! Spread the word - tell everyone you know!

A food desert? You have got to be kidding. In the '80s I lived in Fairmount (pre-Whole Foods) and absolutely no grocery store existed within walking distance. Every single week I went to the Reading Terminal because I knew of nowhere else to go.

On the west side, we have South Square Market, a little pricey but generally not for produce and the produce in general is good. We also have Pathmark, conveniently on the 12 line.

On the east side, we have several small markets that sell prepared food and some produce. A few blocks away you have a SuperFresh and a Whole Foods.

Except for the Pathmark, many of these options target the better heeled. But so do farmers markets.

I'm glad to see a farmer's market (though I'm close enough to Fitler Square), but exaggerations drive me nuts because they undermine arguments. Used too often, they take on the tinge of crying wolf.

Here's a question for you: How in the world do growers in this area already have these vegetables ripe? Are these all greenhouse grown? And why isn't lettuce on the list?

Corn on June 25? Tomatoes? Peppers? Really?

I grow vegetables with a handful of others in a community garden. I started beans, cucumbers and melon by seed April 1. I bought larger tomato and pepper plants and had them in the ground at the beginning of May (I also got some volunteer tomatoes, which made me very happy). I have a few green tomatoes and a few hot peppers, but everything else is still in flower (the arugula has come and gone and the garlic I planted last fall still isn't quite ready for harvest).

    I don't get it.

Just a guess, could they have been started in a greenhouse ?

Sure. And the ones I plant are started early, too. But I can't remember ever seeing "real" tomatoes by June 24.

Some of the plants I saw for sale in supermarkets weeks ago already had green tomatoes on them.

I had the first ripe tomato from my backyard garden yesterday.

If you have questions about the produce, why not stop by the market and speak with Mr. Beiler?

For the farmers it's a business and the more crops they can get the more they make. I would imagine that the farmers would stagger their crops so that they have a relatively steady income over the growing season. Starting the plants in greenhouse would take up a much smaller space and allow them to keep their fields full of producing plants. It they're started in similar soil I doubt if there would be much difference in the end product.

    Bingo!

My brother is a farmer. He raises 'early' tomatoes in a plot covered by a sort of plastic greenhouse, uses hooped plastic over row crops, and employs many strategies that result in earlier crops than home gardeners achieve.

I stopped by as the farmer was closing up - they told me they had a highly successful day and were very pleased. Mrs. Beiler also mentioned how nice everybody was. The organizers should be very proud and happy about "another success".

We picked up some veggies and met some new people and their dogs. Thanks so much to the organizers and the Beilers. We'll be back next Friday!
