    Default 15th and Reed

    Hi,

I was curious about any opinions or thoughts on this area. I'm not too familiar with it but am considering a house over there. I know it's not perfect but maybe it's getting better?
My first guess would be that I would probably walk the dog to the east as opposed to the west.

    Any info? THANKS!

As a 65 yr old,100% Downtown guy, there was never a Newbold area, these are realtor marketing gimmicks.Realtors are worst than car salesmen. They cant hold a real job. That area is 15th & Reed, plain & simple.Dont buy there it is still scruffy with a bad elements, also in the middle of 15th St is a brand new halfway house for substance abuse,if not rehabbed, dont go more than 80k.Realtors invented JUNOGO area, just north of Girard,in Fishtown, marketing gimmicks, exclusive names, higher prices

Newbold is a pocket of the city where people where thick glasses, ride bikes to work when they are not working from home, telecommute, drive CUV's and use carshare. We drink good coffee and enjoy good beer. We rather buy things online and always use promo codes since we are saving money to buy this area up to not pay rent anymore since it's 15 mins to work and the real estate taxes are cheap.

My yearly real estate tax bill is %15 of what it is 2 miles up the road.

It's going to take time to change, but it is happening now, but you should already be in Florida if you're already 65.

Going back to Florida tomorrow for the weekend, that is the classic definition of a Yuppie, you outsiders, not home grown Downtowners,it takes 20 years before consideration to our South Philly community. You paid too much for your dwelling or a tenant.I welcome new blood to Downtown, just take it easy with your ideas of how we should live here in South Philly,by the way, that life style is Anti-So Philly, drink regular beer,& coffee or you will be targeted as jerk-offs,when in Rome be like the Romans

According to the Inquirer's murder map, there were only 2 murders on that corner for 2009:

    Philadelphia Homicides | Philadelphia Inquirer | 02/20/2008

Only two murders a month apart? Thats a domestic issue with payback a month later. Isolated issues are everywhere in the city.

This corner does have that new rehabbed apt building on the corner but it would be nicer if it was a couple blocks south on 15th closer to passyunk.

Parking is great around there since there is alot of commerical zoning from 14th to 15th on reed.

I'm a few blocks south west of there (18th and Morris), and I dig this area. No problems since I moved here a few months ago.

15th and Reed is not a good area. Believe or not, my italian immigrant grandparents lived there in the 70s. The neighborhood went downhill fast. It's not as bad as some of the worst areas in the city-but I would not bet on that area coming back anytime soon.

Ok, let me get this straight...

If you ride a bike you're not a true South Philadelphian?

If you drink "good" beer you're not a true South Philadelphia?

I just want to be keeping the right tally...

Or gang retaliation murders. I am not trying to demean the area and hope it continues on it's way up, but it is an area where you still have the opportunity be part of stray bullet. Whether it's 2 ops or 5 ops a year, it is still an unfortunate reality.

While it was good to see SOSO work out, this area still has a long uphill battle against the daily violence. Unfortunately, "bad" areas can be defined the stupidity of a few.

thanks again for the input. I guess I'm looking for more from people who actually live around there now (thanks pahiker!).

I understand that things may not be like they were in the 70s but a current prospective is great.

for example I live in QV near 4th and christian where I have read numerous threads on how its kind of dangerous right there and yet I have never felt the least bit unsafe.

I wonder below Washington Ave. all the time. When I'm down there I wonder where Mel is. I wonder if he's ever happy about anything. I wonder if he'll ever get the stink of mamas peppers out of his thinning hair.

Oh no! I don't have the respect of home grown south filthy guys! Woah is me!

No one cares. You're an endangered species. You matter to no one but other xenophobic throwback neanderthals you occupy space with in the Dolphin smoking your lungs black and oggling the 40 year old bikini dancers.

You're irrelevant and matter to no one. Feel the love.

I know, I've done some oggling myself on occassion But you know the "home grown South Philly types" like Mel that hang out in there. That's who I'm referring to.

Mel seems to think that anyone who disagrees with his myopic world view can't fit in in South Philly. Even though I've lived there, partied at the Road Runners club house, been in every bar throughout the area, have lifelong friends who grew up in and still live in South Philly, have siblings who are officers in Philly trade unions, a father who was president of a Philly trade union, frequently attend neighborhood block parties in South Philly, and have lived in Philly myself for almost 2 decades. He doesnt' understand how little he understands about his own neighborhood.
