Just in case any of you on this thread didn't hear, Will at 1911 East Passyunk is scheduled to open on Friday, August 24th.

Garage is shooting for a Nov 1, 2012 opening. The more I read about this, the more excited I get. (also helps that it's roughly 15 steps from my front door)

Hopefully the rumor about Elvis is true because then none of it will matter: He has his fanbase and he made Sticks & Stones really fun. If he's there, I'll be there too!
History book description of South Philly: "No matter how fat residents got, space allowed for nothing larger than a full size bed. Thus, the suburban population explosion...which led to central air, SUV's, and the general destruction of our planet."
Remember that Elvis is a double edged sword. As much as he has a fan base, he also has people that are turned off by him. So he is polarizing. One bad thing about bringing back Elvis in my opinion is that Noir will just be S&S with a new paint job.
I really like the owner and her cousin who run/ manage the place. I've been in there quite a few times but like you I'm still struggling to figure out where they fit and what their niche is.
It's interesting to hear this opinion. Everyone I knew loved Sticks & Stones and we all agreed Elvis was part of what we loved. This is the first time I ever heard anyone say he could be a turn-off. I guess anyone can like or dislike anyone else but since this is the first time I've heard of a dislike, I'm leaning toward Elvis being more of an asset than any type of liability. Plus, if he was doing a poor job for Sticks & Stones, I doubt Noir would take him on.
As for Noir being Sticks & Stones with a new paint job: Good! I didn't mind the old paint job (in fact, I preferred it) but I loved S&S. From what I understand, they didn't close because they weren't doing a good business. There was apparently (or allegedly) some sort of landlord/tenant disagreement.
EDIT: I should clarify this. It made it sound like the only people I knew who liked S&S and Elvis were my friends (people similar to me, duh). Whenever I talked to people about restaurants & bars on the Avenue (and isn't it funny how that topic ALWAYS comes up when people find out you live here?), everyone had already been to S&S and I always asked whether they knew Elvis.

Well, that confirms that we know none of the same people. I thought S&S was a mess (with a great draft list). Everyone I knew walked in and immediately pegged it as a place that didn't ever have itself figured, from the bizarre, mismatched decor to the hit-or-miss food to the general vibe. To each his own. I thought Elvis was a fine bartender, although not particularly a draw.
The draft list at Noir caused me to turn around as soon I walked in. The bar for (sorry) bars in this neighborhood is very, very high. I get the sense that the Noir people didn't really understand that when they opened, though I wish them the best.
I'm glad someone else notices this - I commented about the awkward and uncomfortable proportions for S&S's bar and someone on here called me whiny. I really hoped Noir would fix it, but it doesn't sound like they have - so I am already associating their atmosphere and aesthetic as awkward and uncomfortable.
Ha. I remember nothing about S&S's bar height, but I was talking about the metaphorical bar, as in "the bar is set high in East Passyunk for drinking establishments."
And Ho Chi Minh, yes, for sure: having Joy Manning calling out East Passyunk as the new dining row of Philly is a big get.

it was not that good the few times I ate there.
S&P had a short and overpriced menu. $22 for salmon?! Grow up and give me a real fish at that price.
One can quibble that the fish was Atlantic farmed or poorly prepared, but $22 is a good price generally speaking (quality dependent). And if the fish was wild-caught from the PNW, $22 is a steal.
PARC bought another building across from the fountain, and this one is going to have that Dutch restaurant from the guy from Chicago

No information: Noord Philly but the few photos look interesting.
It'll be nice to have something unique.
