    Default Colombo Burns

Ch 6 said it hit the restaurant and spread to the apts. The building has been for sale for ever and the signs came down about a month or so ago. Hope they had insurance. I'll add an old pic soon.

Hopefully this dump will have to be razed. Would be nice to see a more inviting, attractive building at the gateway of East Passyunk Ave.

    Default Wiseguy Lightining?

Just sayin'. Really horrific if true, given the fact that people lived there-could have gone wrong in a big way.

Couldn't help but wonder the same thing, Topper, being that this seems like such a shady place from all the rumors you hear about it.

Was in there for a tour a few years ago. The residents were firmly entrenched and older. Hope everyone's ok.

This guy wasn't wise enough to burn it himself, but he was dim enough to do it by accident. Now it will sit as a burned out building for years. On the other hand don't be surprised if he goes crazy and rebuilds a new monstrosity.

Passyunk Post has some pictures of the damage. http://www.passyunkpost.com/2012/08/...with-pics.html

Maybe this means something will finally happen with that building. That place has so much potential. I could imagine the guy from Silk City or some other NoLibs spot turning that sidewalk into something really cool.

The liquor licence was approved ? I did not know that. That had to be a couple of years ago.

If the owner is willing to sell the land, this is a huge opportunity for a businessperson and could be transformative for the lower portion of the avenue (and those poor businesses across from this monstrosity). Based on the owner's past behavior however I wouldn't be surprised to see this lot sit vacant for a long time. At least our great local orgs--EPX, PARC, and the BID--won't let it become a real eyesore.

My folks called it Greek lightning, I suppose in relation to the number of times over the years that diners burn.

From what I understand through the grapevine, the owner of the Cantina actually was interested in buying the Colombo property but was deterred by the ri-goddamn-diculous asking price. If this building is razed, I can't imagine the owner coming down to a reasonable price. We'll see.

I was always under the impression that it was two owners who couldn't agree to sell it. Either way, I didn't even know about this until I walked by Monday night with the baby and the dog and smelled the "burned building smell" as I walked by. Ok, Birra guys..you got a new location for that burger joint!

No, that's Rita's now, at Passyunk & Dickinson. This is on Passyunk between Snyder and Juniper.
