Default What to do with the King Of Jeans sign?

"Of all the clothing boutiques along South Philly's East Passyunk corridor, perhaps none has a sign as spectacular as King of Jeans.

Unfortunately, neighbors have known for some time that the store is on its way out. Philebrity reported from the rumor mill as early as 2009 that the store was going to close. The building, at 1843 E. Passyunk Avenue (at 13th Street), has been for sale for a while now, and the owner is, according to Naked Philly, tax delinquent for about $11,000.

Developer Max Glass wants to renovate the building as a residential space. But what's going to happen with that wonderful, awful sign?"

Redevelop the site as a bigger, better, taco-centered version of Cantina... and call it King of Beans.

Let it rot. It's kind of funny, but I would rather have a useful building than a sign that is only interesting for its stupidity.

Replace the goofy "singing fountain" with the lit-up, rotating King of Jeans sign.

Should be the centerpiece of a new art museum on E Passyunk Ave. Why should the Parkway get all the good art?

PhilaMOCA should move that tiny crap space they have in Callow Hill. Of course the neighbors would never go for live music.

it would be pretty cool for a roller rink (do they still exist?) or a bowling alley (minus the king of jeans part). that sign is pretty slick

At the least the sign should be hung in the Art Museum. But really, what they should is create a much bigger version of the sign and put it on top of the Comcast Center. (A four-sided box, each side with sign, so that it's seemless with the boxy design of Comcast Center, while also visible from all four directions.)

Why take it down? It isn't like the building itself is really a looker to begin with.

It could totally be the City's new slogan.

    Philadelphia: The King of Jeans.

    LOVE it!

Or a bar. I would totally want that on the wall if I owned one. It should be posted on eBay/Craigslist with the caveat that it must be repurposed in a public place, and can't leave Philly. It's classic.

Not directly related, but close. Does anyone know what that building directly to the south on 13th st of the King of Jeans building is? It seems to have real high ceilings from what can be seen through the fenced up windows, but I've never seen anyone coming or going in there. Is it some kind of gym? I've always wondered about it.

I think it is used for telemarketing.

It's a Septa substation, I believe for the old 23 trolley line. EPX is planning a mural for the windows.

And before someone asks, I believe that Septa has no interest in selling (unfortunately) since the reintroduction of trolleys to the 23 route is still in their long term plans (also unfortunately).

Pretty sure this is also backup power for the subway.

Wow, I would have never thought that, especially with another Septa substation on McKean and Juniper about one block away.

Any proof that either of these is really what that place is?

Back to the OP, I can say that sign is a conversation piece. Every time I have guests visiting, they alway comment on it as we walk around the neighborhood.
