Default Point Breeze Quote of the Day

Point Breeze Quote of the Day - Curbed Philly

Point Breeze Quote of the Day

"I almost got ran off the road yesterday by a young black male on a brand new shiny blue dirt bike going the wrong way at 22nd and Morris right where they made the busts. 18 years old with 40 grand cash, fire power and dirt bikes. These kid's ain't playing around anymore since their parents would rather focus on voting NO on all new developments during the afternoon on work days." [Philadelphia Speaks]

I don't know who wrote this here but it's hysterical.

Given that we've heard lots of memorable quotes - from "here to midnight" etc... I thought it would be funny to share some here.
For example, now i heard this at the BiG old meeting in January. It went something like this. 'No thank you I want to sit on the end in case somebody stabs this fool.' it's been too long to remember the precise wording.
"If you're going to tell people the truth, you better make them laugh; otherwise they'll kill you."
    - attributed to both George Bernard Shaw & Oscar Wilde

"I never clean up after my dogs, because I have trained them to run with me off leash while I ride my bike the wrong way on the sidewalk."

I said that. I didn't think I would be qouted. In a city like ours, I would have never thought I would be a victim of dirt bike road rage from a kid bearly old enough to walk when I started driving.

The culture of the hood prevents this city from overcoming crime like NYC did in the past.

With all these people, one thing I noticed was the lack of litter!

One of my favorites was at the January zoning meeting. Not the one in the church itself, but the one on the actual day it was supposed to be. That's the one where Theresa came making a lot of noise about how she was never notified about the meeting. Everyone tried to remind her that the meetings were always the same day every month. (Also, if she didn't know when the meeting was, why was she there making a ruckus in the first place?) As she was explaining her case to the clearly-not-amused cop who was called over to deal with the situation, this fun little exchange took place:

Theresa: "I didn't know there was a meeting tonight."
Person in crowd: "The meeting is always the fourth Monday of each month!"
Cop: "These people all seemed to know there was a meeting tonight."
Theresa: "Well, they all have email. I don't have email."
Person in crowd: "I didn't need email. I can read a calendar."

This transcript from the council meeting has a bunch of them, but these words are famous.

    http://legislation.phila.gov/transcr...1/ru032311.pdf

    TG:

    "Potential burglary: These
people -- we're not saying that everybody
moving in is on the up-and-up. They can
jump down onto the second story and go
down into chimneys or whatever, or go
through their window. It is a possible
haven for burglary, and this is what the
    people have stated."

    TG:

"And we consider this a health
concern. The CDC has a report out that
says that when people start seeing
buildings like this and they start
    thinking about it's gentrification, they
start to get worried. They stress out.
It brings on increased heart attacks and
also strokes. You can go to cdc.gov and
you can check out that report if you want
    to."

You left off the end of that quote:

"Hide your kids, hide your wife
And hide your husband cuz they're rapin everybody out here."

Believe it or not, there actually is an article from the CDC.

This blames gentrification for lead paint exposure. It has to be a joke.

Seriously. Did we actually pay government employees to write this:

"These special populations are at increased risk for the negative consequences of gentrification. Studies indicate that vulnerable populations typically have shorter life expectancy; higher cancer rates; more birth defects; greater infant mortality; and higher incidence of asthma, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. In addition, increasing evidence shows that these populations have an unequal share of residential exposure to hazardous substances such as lead paint.

Other health effects include limited access to or availability of the following:

    affordable healthy housing
    healthy food choices
    transportation choices
    quality schools
bicycle and walking paths, exercise facilities, etc.
    social networks

    Changes can also occur in:

    stress levels
    injuries
    violence and crime
    mental health
    social and environmental justice"

Sounds to me like those are the effects of living in un-gentrified neighborhoods!

I agree with them that some lower-income people, especially renters, are displaced as housing values increase, but this is a process that has been going on in our cities since they were begun. Point Breeze has oodles of vacant land to be built on before any current residents even have to think about being displaced. I live in Southwest Center City, and we still have a substantial number of low-income residents even though we are considered gentrified, or nearly so, at this point.

I have to hand it to Betty Beaufort: she's actually better at making her arguments than the CDC are at making theirs.

This isn't just fallacious or dishonest, it's not even coherent. It would have gotten an F in an 11th-grade composition class. It is truly shocking that the esteemed CDC would allow their name to be associated with it in any way.

maybe they were hacked, or don't know about it. it's a big place.

maybe lead exposure because of the construction knocking down old walls and shells of buildings... you know the burned out ones or the ones with raccoon, rat and possum condos?

Other health effects include limited access to or availability of the following:

    affordable healthy housing
    healthy food choices
    transportation choices
    quality schools
bicycle and walking paths, exercise facilities, etc.
    social networks

    Changes can also occur in:

    stress levels
    injuries
    violence and crime
    mental health
    social and environmental justice"

um... making a place better leads to INCREASED exposure to the first list and changes in the opposite direction for the second.
