Default PSCA Forum on our local elementary schools April 3 at SPOAC

As I was walking home on Monday after work I strolled by the playground at Columbus Square and I saw all of the young parents playing with their kids, all seemingly under 3, and I though to myself, the only way these people are here in two years is if the local schools can handle them. Well we have two elementary schools in our hood, and I think the best chance for keeping all of our young parents in the hood is if they get better. So, I saw this and I thought I would post.

    Good schools ⇔ Good neighborhood

    Tuesday, April 3, 6:30pm
SPOAC – E. Passyunk and Dickinson
An Open Forum About The Accomplishments and Challenges of the Schools In Passyunk Square

We all know how important good schools are to keeping our neighborhood safe, vibrant and healthy. But what can we do to help, especially in this time of shrinking budgets and administrative upheaval?

    Hear from a panel including:
Lisa Kaplan, Principal at Jackson Elementary
Mike Wang, Managing Director of the Philadelphia School Partnership
    Christina Grimes, PSCA Education Committee

We’ll be brainstorming to determine ways that the Passyunk Square Civic Association can better support our schools and recruiting new members for our Education Committee.

Can’t find a sitter? Not a problem we will have someone on site to lend a hand.

    Refreshments served.

Just a helpful hint for when you attend the event: it's more productive to talk about "supporting schools" (as the flyer did) rather than making them "better" or "improving" them. I think you'll find that Jackson is already a great school with a vibrant community, parent involvement, capable administration and teachers etc. etc.

This should be cross posted on the EPX website since the Jackson catchment extends down through the western half of that neighborhood, bound by EPave, I believe.

Great point. Even as a childless 30 something I would be willing to support our local schools.

Forgive my ignorance but what's the second school in the neighborhood other than Jackson? Kirkbride or are you talking about a charter?

I am really not at all involved in this, I just thought this should get posted. My understanding though is that it is Kirkbride.

Kirkbride is the other K-8 public school whose catchment is wholly in the PSCA area.
There are a couple other schools whose catchments partially overlap PSCA, but Jackson and Kirkbride are the only fully-contiguous catchments.
