P’unk Square Gets Artsy by Popular Demand

Passyunk Square Civic Association to host the first annual P’unk Square Community Art Show and Auction

On Friday, September 9, 2011, from 6 to 9 PM the Passyunk Square Civic Association will host the first annual P’unk Square Community Art Show and Auction. The event, which will be held at 822 Ellsworth Street, will include both an art auction and a raffle.

The Passyunk Square Civic Association Executive Board conducted a spring survey of Passyunk Square residents. The survey results pointed to a high level of demand for an art show and opportunity for the community to come together to enjoy local talent.

“Our Association is committed to not only providing opportunities for the members of our community to come together, but also to highlighting all of the talent that local Philadelphians- many of whom live here in our neighborhood - have to offer,” said Lauren Parker, the event’s coordinator. “Our friends and neighbors asked for this type of event in the survey results, and we’ve already had a great response from local artists and the community.”

The event will feature sculpture, prints, jewelry, photography and paintings. Artists will include: Chris Crisman, Kelly Gadsby, Jason Goldberg, Kyra Harris, Carolyn Giordano, Sam McConnell, Isaiah Zagar, Darla Jackson, Abiezar Galloza, Nikki Virbitsky, Becca Kuhn, Elissa Kara, Tony Pregiato, and Lauren Parker.

Tickets for the event can be purchased for $6 in advance through Paypal by clicking this link or for $12 at the door. Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase. Beer, wine and light appetizers will be provided. All proceeds will benefit the work of the Passyunk Square Civic Association.

Very cool event, will do everything I can to get there, and will pass info on to a few of my "artsy" friends, lol.

    Default Today's featured artist is...

    Isaiah Zagar

If you've been, well, outside anywhere in South Philadelphia, you're sure to be familiar with the work of Isaiah Zagar. Here's a bit of Zagar's bio from his website:

Isaiah Zagar is an award-winning mosaic mural artist whose work can be found on over 100 public walls throughout the city of Philadelphia and around the world. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Brooklyn, Zagar received his B.F.A. in Painting and Graphics at the Pratt Institute of Art in New York City. When he was 19 years old, Zagar discovered the folk art installations of Clarence Schmidt in Woodstock, New York. Influenced by Schmidt, Picasso, Jean Debuffet, Curt Schwitters, Antonio Gaudi, Simon Rodia and Joseph Ferdinand Cheval, he was inspired to include the concepts of untrained artists as manifestations of fine art.
Tickets to the P'unk Square Community Art Show and Auction are available through Paypal for $6 or $12 at the door. Show takes place on September 9 from 6pm to 9pm at 822 Ellsworth Street.

Default P'unk Square Community Art Show featured artist for Wednesday 8/31 is...

    Nikki Virbitsky

From her bio on the website of the Fleischer Art Memorial, where she serves faculty:

Ms. Virbitsky's artistic vision is one filled with candy, vintage toys, and the remains of pop culture. Her imaginative work is a delicious mishmash of syrupy cute and deviously eerie. Her paintings and embroideries have been shown at galleries locally and nationally including Mew Gallery, The Kin Ship Gallery, and Village Art Center. Nikki's commissions are part of private collections throughout the nation, and her unique hand-dyed and handspun yarn is used by fiber artists from around the globe.
You can see some examples of her work on her website.
