Philadelphia Gaelic Athletic Association
If folks are talking about Philadelphia sports, I wanted to let everyone know about the Philadelphia Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). They have been active in Philly for many years, but most Americans don't even realize it exists.
The Philadelphia GAA promotes and coordiates the Irish sports of Gaelic Football and Hurling in the region. Playing the sports are not limited to the Irish in Philadelphia, Americans are encouraged to come out and play (or watch).
For example the Philadelphia Shamrocks Hurling Club (hurling- a field sport that is a mix between soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey) has practices on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the Torresdale Boys Club. To get started the only equipment needed are shorts, tshirt and cleats. Practice hurley's will be available at practices. If you are interested email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thanks for the info.
I grew up playing gaelic football, but just a little bit of hurling.
What are the age groups?
The clubs have players from their 20's all the way into their 40's. There is also a youth league for kids to learn the sports.
