Default TLA Video - Closing Shop

Truly an end of an era...

In a press release, TLA president Ray Murray said, “I speak for the entire TLA Video staff when I say “Thank You” to our loyal customers. It was an amazing 24-year run for our South Street store, but changing viewing habits of our customers (internet, cable, satellite, rental-by-mail, etc.) require us to change with the times.” In the meantime, the TLA Video at 1520 Locust Street remains open.

:::Philebrity…media, culture, music and more::: Blog Archive R.I.P.: TLA Video South Street Store, 1985-2009

Like other long-timers, I remember when Ray, Claire (and co) opened the very fist TLA Video - located alongside the TLA on South Street; in the 2nd floor of the rowhouse. Years later, I was lucky enough to house the offices for my upstart weekly arts magazine in the same location - it's a shame to see TLA go; but quite understandable - especially in this age of Netflix and 2.0 communications.

I just hope it's not replaced by something ridiculous.
(I.e. When Tower Records became ****ing Walgreens. CVS is right near there...)

    Default TLA video closing?

Hub says someone told him yesterday that TLA video is closing. Anyone know for certain?

Also he has had a membership there for so long that he thinks he gave them a $60 cash deposit. Anyone else remember that? He wonders if it would be worth the effort to go & ask for that back.

Sad to see, but when you see every single Hollywood Video disappear off the face of the earth, the writing is on the wall....

Just wonder what effect this will have on the film fests(All three of them)

This sucks. I used to be a frequent customer. Besides their great selection, I loved that I could swing by while walking my dog. They'd always have a treat for him.

I'm just finishing up an account at 1520 Locust. I always paid $175 in advance to get a good per video rate, and I admit I've been feeling hesitant about renewing. Now I feel guilty.

Even if you renewed, I doubt that it would have saved that location.

Red Box, Netflix, and OnDemand has killed the Video Store.

Well, Netflix was the first and the biggest, but Red Box and other machines located in supermarkets and Wal-Marts/Targets are taking out the last audience who didn't like waiting for a movie in the mail and still used the stores.

Sure, Red Box and the like are taking up the slack of now-MIA video stores, but they're not really responsible for their demise.

It's basically been all Netflix. And why not--they're cheap as hell, and have almost everything. Even MB and I are members now. Opening a video store right before the Netflix takeover was one of the biggest business mistakes anyone could have made.

Good point. I guess it's time for a Netflix account.
I rented Logan's Run (guilty pleasure?) via iTunes once, but I suspect it was edited. I should stick with DVDs.

If you don't already do Netflix/Blockbuster Online, DO IT!

Also, Redbox usually has tons of free movie codes.

I have been a netflix member for about 4 years now, with a year off in the middle cause I got busy and wasn't watching movies... but I LOVE Netflix. Its funny though I remember when I first started hearing about it, seeing annoying pop up ads online about it... and I'm like really?? mail order dvd rental? that's so stupid!
Very sad that all the video rental stores have closed, though. when I was a kid, going to the local blockbuster to pick out a movie was actually a part of the fun of movie night.
