    Default Another WTF???

At 6:10 this morning, a parade (I'm not kidding) of tow trucks, some PPA, some private, came rolling down 8th St. Someone was on their speaker thing yelling that all parked cars had to move now or they'd be towed. I don't know one way or the other if there are signs up, but in all my years here I've never seen/heard this approach before. I don't know where they started but I'm at 8th & Catherine/Fulton. I never thought I'd say this, but I feel sorry for the car owners this morning.

They always do this for street repairs, a movie shoot, or an event(like a bike race).

I live on Front street and it happens to us all of the time. They usually move the cars to somewhere else in the neighborhood.

Happens on Two Street quite frequently around this time of year into January.

They also put signs up on Queen between 5th and 6th yesterday (only a few blocks from you) saying they would be working on that particular block from 6am - 6pm 10/7 - 10/9. When I left for work at 8am this morning they still had not arrived to begin the work, but most of the cars were gone. Not sure if the owners had moved them or if that was the work of the PPA.

They did that to us in Mt. Airy when they chewed up the streets to repave. They had posted signs, but didn't show up the first 2 days, so everyone blew them off. The 3rd day, at 6:00am, they drove around blaring a siren and telling us to move or they'd move them.

They didn't actually tow them, they just moved them a few blocks over.

They were towing cars off Queen Street between 2nd and 3rd this morning around 7am, and had safety cones blocking Queen from 2nd to Front. There was also a sign on 3rd at Queen but I didn't see the date, the bus was coming and the sign was on the other side of 3rd.

4th Street was dug up between Catharine and Christian this morning. Most of the cars were gone, but I didn't see any tow signs. I could be wrong about the signs though.

It looked like they were paving Christian between 2nd and 3rd this morning. Between that and the trash trucks, my bus was so late I just about made it to work on time.

Say good-bye to your curbs after the repaving. They did this to Catharine St three years ago, and thanks to so many re-pavings over the years, we no longer have curbs. The pavement is so high in many areas that it is level with the sidewalks. This situation causes rain water to slow onto the sidewalks, creating puddles. It also makes it nearly impossible to park and know how near or far you are from the curb. Many cars are actually parked on the sidewalks because they have nothing to "hit" as they back up into the space.

Eames, you can definitely feel when you're on the sidewalk as opposed to the street unless you parallel park at 40 MPH

Not on my block. The pavement and the sidewalk curb are at exactly the same level. So when you back up, even at the very slowest of speeds, you have no idea of where the road ends and the sidewalk begins. In a normal situation, you would feel some sort of resistance as you backed up. Not here.

The problem isn't "too many repavings"; it's that sidewalks and especially older curb stones sink over time.

When they repave the streets these days, they strip off the top layer and put a new one down, so the street level stays the same. But every year your curb stones sink lower and lower.
