Yeah, because a gun is so useful when someone sneaks up from behind and slashes your face open.
When you're on the ground in an expanding pool of your own blood, in shock, screaming for help and trembling uncontrollably from the massive dose of adrenaline that just entered your brain, that's when you've got to pull your piece and show this punk who's in control.

Man, I hope they catch that bastard.
Does the Wishing Well have any exterior cameras?
What kind of a moron starts slashing first and stealing after.
I managed to miss the part about the ambush. Let me change this: Too bad he didn't do it when someone with an LTCF was nearby who was willing and able to help. Or someone who had an LTCF who was able to draw and fire after the first jab. Or had done this to someone who would have had an opposite reaction to a slash to the face (adrenaline rushes effect people differently). Regardless, is just goes to show that you have to be 110% aware of your surroundings when you're about to unlock your door.
But I think we can all agree that it would be better if this punk had been perforated before he managed to mangle this poor girl.

I'm going on about ridiculous and implausible "what if" scenarios that serve as meaningless arguments for the efficacy of firearms in random, confused, frightening, and stress-filled incidents such as this one.

Which is pretty much a useless comment given the location and circumstances of the incident. Like a lot of crimes of this nature, it was sudden, occurred very quickly, the perp was right up against the victim as he slashed her, and then escaped just as quickly after the slashing. Someone nearby with a weapon would have either not reacted in time, shot the victim when trying to hit the perp, or fired randomly after the perp when he fled, endangering countless people in their homes and cars.
In fact, the whole incident probably wouldn't have happened if someone were nearby and in sight, with or without a gun because a POS like this guy preys on people when no one is looking. That's the whole aim of a mugging, right?
Your elaborate concealed or open carry fantasies have no bearing on the real life situation.
