The official greek picnic that was regularly on the 2nd weekend in July for years hasn't happened in ages. Some people still equate that weekend with the Greek picnic and most of those people that act out that weekend are 1) not affilated with a Greek-lettered org or 2) never attended college to begin with. There is a much smaller more sedate Greek picnic that is run by the people that started the July one in August. You have waaay more older people at that one than you have had at the old July one. I am talking people in their 40-60's along with some of the younger ones meeting and quietly having fun. It is a family affair, you have mothers/daughters, fathers/sons attending that one, meeting with old friends and not causing a ruckus at all. Those that rampage on the 2nd weekend in July have nothing to do with the Greek picnic then or now, they were mainly outsiders.
So those in the 'know' do know when the other one is and quietly attend that one while others remember when the old one was and automatically assume that any shenanighans on the 2nd weekend in July *must* be greek-picnic related and "oh the horror!" I do not condone any acts of violence that occured during the 2nd weekend in July and know that the official organizers backed off for a few years and there was no "official" picnic while they re-grouped because of that. Itis a shame that something that had a history of 30 years strong got ruined by those who have nothing to do with it at all.
For the good that I wish I do not do, but the bad that I do not wish is what I practice.
