Please enlighten us (or me at least), wasn't Nebinger on the chopping block and the students due to be merged with George Washington and/or Andrew Jackson?

    Default Not yet!

Nothing is a done deal yet. We are hoping by showing a group of active parents (who can bring resources to the school) that it won't close. This would be devastating to our neighborhood. A couple of things on our side: the building is in decent shape, the principal is committed, and our small, but mighty group.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up.

I think you are correct that closing Nebinger would be really harmful to the neighborhood as well as waste an opportunity to develop one of the next up and coming schools.

    Best of luck.

If they close Nebinger would it not be best to send those kids to Meredith at 5th and Fitzwater?

I agree with you but Meredith may be nearing capacity.

There is also the issue that the children from the projects would then be attending Meredith and I imagine that there would be a great deal of concern (some valid, most not) about that.

Please note: I am not looking to pick a fight over this.

Eastcoast is right. Its a pretty straight forward capacity issue, not ideal proximity. What is important to note, however, is that according to the Public School Notebook, the data used to determined school student populations is fuzzy; the process has not been transparent and there is little evidence that future projections are a real reflection of the booming populations in Center City and its environs. Its really important for this Friends group to make it obvious to the powers-that-be that this neighborhood is busting at the seams with toddlers and preschoolers and what may seem to be an under-capacity building could quickly fill. Some schools will need to close; I just hope that some good ones don't get caught up in the mess.

Great response. My bias is showing but the more Philly public elementaries seen as highly-desirable, the better. Everyone trying to pile on to the same select five is neither sustainable nor community building. Best of luck to you all at Nebinger!

Thank you everyone for their replies. Believe me, if Meredith was an option for my children, I would close Nebinger myself and run down to QV. Meredith is at capacity so we would be forced to cross Washington. PLEASE help us spread the word to families in the Nebinger cachement. This is only going to work if we ALL do it together. There are some very good things going on at Nebinger that get over shadowed by Meredith and the kids from 5th street. I believe we can do this together, but we need about 20 families to make it happen. CONTACT me. friendsofnebinger@gmail.com Come to the tour in September...details to follow.

Good luck to you. not sure if you have tried these, but a couple of suggestions in getting the word out -- Try contacting QVNA and see if they will do an email blast for you. Not sure if they will, but can't hurt to ask. Also, does Nebinger have a home school association -- or is that what you are trying to establish? I get email blasts from Meredith home school assoc all the time (not over the summer however). See if you can also do an email blast to all Nebinger parents through the home school association or other mechanism. Also maybe a Facebook page.
