The moose and Philadelphia have a long intertwined history history. You can see the moose roaming Fairmount Park just like William Penn would have when he arrived. In fact in 1776 it was rumored that a Moose whispered in Thomas Jefferson's Ear that if he helped form a new more perfect nation then a mediocre team which throws balls into baskets could prosper in the cradle of liberty and they would be named after that year of Providence.

One of the most regal animals to roam the wild, Phil E. Moose certainly fits that bill, standing tall as he represents the Sixers (he stands over seven-feet tall in fact, with the antlers). In his youth, Phil E. Moose would often be seen dunking a basketball with ease, aided by his great height. Throughout his high school, collegiate and professional games, Phil E. Moose was a scoring star, and was excited to learn he had been "traded" to the 76ers in order to entertain fans during games at the Wells Fargo Center.

Geez, the NBA needs to remember the game is the actual attraction. Between "dancers", dunk contests and dumb-ass mascots, the game seems to be an afterthought.

All the mascots are mediocre, I guess Ben Franklin is the best. Personally I didn't hate Hip Hop, his halftime shows were pretty cool. I hope it's the same guy behind the costume.

Actually, the list of things that are now wrong with pro-basketball is very long. So much so, that I kind of hoped the strike wiped out the season and forced the NBA to re-evaluate its whole product.

Ben Franklin is by far the best. I think I would like him better if they stylized him differently though. He is both strongly connected to Philadelphia and 1776. I'm not sure what a dog or a moose has to do with either.

I'm sure the youth are really going to identify with an old man for the basketball mascot.

Also, I don't think the mascot has to be Philadelphia specific. The Phanatic (a creature that is imaginary and no correlation to Philadelphia) replaced two mascots dressed in colonial garb... and is one of, if not the, best mascot in professional sports.

A lot of it is also what the mascot does during the game (and the Phanatic sketches and routines are top notch).

Nothing is more ghetto than Hip Hop. A freaking jacked up rabbit with a do-rag names HIP HOP? GTFO. His show was pretty impressive...but the image sucked.

The dog would be interesting... My friend used to dj in the lobby for 76er games and would wear a dog costume for the kids. Did it for years until he bought his own bar/club
