Thumbs down Robert N. Coyle Sr.: The Biggest Slumlord of all of Philadelphia (besides PHA)

Slumlord sold them lies, many say | Philadelphia Daily News | 10/26/2009

Now that his slumlording days are pretty much over, he had to sell the mans in South Jersey and buy a Pulte manufactured piece of crap in Glassboro.

Meanwhile, over 100 houses are now headed for sheriff's sale, all at once, in Kensington this Monday.

When I was a kid I worked for Joe Carlin and Bob Coyle, through my employer. It was really depressing to see, and it made me want to do better for my neighborhood than they were doing for their neighborhoods - to prevent people like them from doing that kind of crap here.

My understanding is that at least some of the banks are trying to sell these places to the tenants; it is in the banks' interest to keep them there paying the bills and keeping the lights on, to maintain the values of the houses.

I feel a need to point out that it is not coincidental that Coyle, clearly a man lacking a moral compass, chose to build his over the top home in New Jersey.

I've met Coyle, as I was the representative for a group of neighbors who were trying to get him to fix up some of his houses in our area of East Kenzo. He's probably the most vile person I've ever met. He grew up here, and yet he made his money ruining the lives of both the people who lived in his homes, and the people who have had to live near them. Talk about turning your back on the streets that made you. I called him a slumlord one day and he grinned at me like he loved it. Sent a chill down my spine. He's despicable.

I've seen some banks try to do things which make seeming sense, such as selling the houses to existing tenatants. But a few things get in the way. Just because someone defaults on their mortgage doesn't mean they become the owner. The property still goes through the sheriff sale process, and the new owner still has to pay the bid price. Whether thats the bank or an individual.

This sort of slum lord investing is absolutely rampant in the bad parts of the city. I live in Kensington and its absolutele anarchy as far as landlords go. I hope this guy is the first in a long line of suburban idiots that loses their life savings.

I would apportion most of the blame to banks who let these scumbags take hoards of cash out of these properties. If not for the banks' complicity, these slumlords could not operate.

Actually, Section 8 is way more to blame than banks.

Not when it comes to Coyle, I don't think. He didn't deal with Section 8. He bilked people out of their hard earned money, directly, by promising them ownership of the house and never delivering.

Looks like they've finally nailed the bastard.

Phila. ‘slumlord’ indicted in $10 million bank fraud

I had started a new thread, before google brought me to this classic thread. Maybe a mod could merge them.

Oh if you happen to have any idea where Robert Coyle might be, you might want to contact the FBI:

This comment is 3 years old, but I would point out that THIS is the reason why the City's Land Bank bill frightens me.

What is in the bill to stop a Coyle protégé from doing business with the City's Land Bank and essentially repeating Landvest?

As it is presently written: nothing.

Is Coyle missing? My guess he's in Ireland getting wasted at some pub.

I hope he rots in hell.

Update: Coyle's trial is supposed to start in a couple of hours and I just checked PACER and noticed this interesting development:
Robert N. Coyle Sr. Federal Court Hearing This Morning - Philadelinquency

This may be quite a short hearing.
