    Default Elmwood/International City

I noticed that there was no SW Philly thread on here, so I thought I would post some shots of my neighborhood called 'Elmwood' and sometimes being referred to as 'International City'...There's a SW Center City, but no SW Philadelphia!...

    Population demographics: African-American: 65%, African: 25%, White: 8%, Other: 2% (statistical estimate)

I was gone from the Philadelphia area for the most part between 1985-2005. I think when I left SW was still mostly a White Irish (and a bit Italian) blue collar neighborhood. I remember 60th St. being the border between black and white areas and there being a few incidents and shootings. I guess most of the Whites split in the 90s? Were you there during the white flight? We never seem to have posters from there. The area resembles Oxford Circle a bit. Those neighborhoods seem to empty out of middle class residents quickly once their original population ages and the next generation heads to the suburbs.

I have a friend who grew up and lived in the 6300 block of Buist Avenue in SW Philly, across from St Barnabas Church.

I think he and his mom moved out in the mid-1990s and went to Delco.

I'm pretty sure there's parts that are still white.

Frank, where did you get that photo of the remedial class at Bartram? I'm curious as to how you know it is a remedial class, and what we're supposed to infer from its inclusion here. Is SW Philly somehow unique in its remedial education?

Normally I wouldn't care, but the picture of 73rd Street Lanes is not 73rd Street Lanes. You took it from this site. If you're just posting stock photos from random sites, you might try harder, like by using your own photos, or at least ones from Philadelphia.

Heh. And the Rite Aid is actually one from Virginia.

I guess Elmwood truly is an international city. Frank should have included some of the other nearby sites.
