I can speak for boric acid too. Essentially it's like chalk dust. Not quite sure how it works, but it usually does.

Many years ago I made the mistake of renting an apartment from UCH without close inspection. Boy did I learn a lesson. I soon discovered the entire building (6 units) was overrun with German cockroaches, the little f*****s that essentially make you feel like you live in their apartment. These are the bugs that will go anywhere - drawers, upholstery, ears, don't need humidity or food find their way there in huge numbers.

We disinfected the entire apartment and then emptied out four canisters of boric acid in every crack, along every floorboard, behind and under every kitchen appliance and cabinet. It worked. The apartments on all sides of us were still overrun, but the roaches largely left us alone. We repeated anytime we saw a bug, maybe every month or so, until the end of the lease year and then got as far the eff away from any UCH property as possible.

Thousand leggers and silverfish are harmless. But after that experience I will never live in an apartment where I think there is even a tiny chance that it will have German roaches.
