The entire downtown just seemed incredibly lame to me
Everything is a chain, the bars are corny, the food is bland and everyone walking around was a tourist with a fanny pack. Diversity was non existent. Quincy market is a nightmare that I pray is never replicated here. The north end is too polished, not nearly as authentic as 9th st. Street performers were generic and lacked the soul found in Philly performers
Center city in comparison is way more hip and independent. I dont really appreciate how hip center city is until I go elsewhere. My corner bars (Varga bar and locust bar) would respectively be the best foodie bar and the coolest dive bar in downtown Boston
Both downtowns are clean in my opinion, didn't use the transit much so don't know how it compares
Id agree with the downtown, but tourism is a large part of their economy Id guess with all the foreigners we ran into. Though I would say we never once ate at a chain. Yes they are there but they are in every downtown. Just look at Market East. I had some very good bar food at a tiny bar the Barracuda tavern next to our hotel just off the commons, Sam Lagrassas for amazing sammiches around the corner, Mike and Pattys breakfast sammiches in a tiny storefront in the Bay village just south of the Public Gardens, and Victorias diner down in the south end neighborhood Id guess youd call it. Getting away from the Freedom trail made a huge difference in seeing the city, though that was a nice touristy thing to do for part of a day. We took in a minor league game Saturday afternoon at Fenway then walked back along Newbury St. to our hotel. A long walk but much more enjoyable then staying only in the touristy area around the commons.
