Default RESPOND Energy Is SCAMMING Customers - PA PowerSwitch

    LOL

Power switch companies caught jacking up rates up to the default PECO generator rate, and not disclosing the charging rate:

When changing energy suppliers, check the details | Philadelphia Inquirer | 05/15/2011

    So much for transparency:
Levinson was unaware of the increases because, contrary to PUC regulations, Respond did not list its price per kilowatt-hour on its portion of the monthly Peco bill.

    Pissed off ratepayer

    Good times.

This "faux market" deregulation in electricity is a ****ing joke.

Levinson said the supplier responded curtly to her complaint: "They said, 'We don't put the rate on the bill.' "

They should. PUC spokeswoman Denise McCracken said suppliers were required to include the price per kilowatt-hour on the bill.

Texas is keeping track and statistics of power switch company complaints. They are tracking how often customers complain about slamming.

Stream Energy is near the top of the list. Gateway is also on the list. Will Pennsylvania disclose their list like Texas does?

funny you mention texas as a model since it seems to be the source of the least trustworthy companies. I did check the details and decided on more modest savings with a more reputable company.

Some parts of PA are deregulating faster than Philly for residential per PA PUC http://extranet.papowerswitch.com/st...itch-Stats.pdf
The horror stories aren't worth paying attention to if you remember A) it's like choosing a cellphone company; Caveat Emptor. Read the deal and understand it. B) In event of outage, PECO still comes out because its the law. C) Sure, it's possible for con-men to fix rates and those nightmares you read about, but when push comes to shove, a whole host of PA agencies including the PA PUC would ream them out on their ear if they feel like being on the grid in this state.

I can see how the new scenario would be difficult for seniors and it's good the PUC straightened that out.

One thing I wouldn't trust, are the suppliers who bill separately. They may be from out of state and PECO knows PA PUC billing practices, so I would only go one-bill. Some scamming supplier might not hesitate to pull a quick one on the already confusing GRT tax semantics. With one bill, given a rate and # of kWh, there's little room for them to foul anything up in regard to the taxes.

Can I ask who you use? I've just started research into switching from PECO.

Good question. I looked in the obvious places and didn't see anything.

PS: Variable rate plan + Bills not being protocol = Above consumer nightmare.
Maybe the system billing flaw was corrected, but there's enough things to forget and be wary of in the treadmill of life, I wouldn't bite the bait of variable rates. If a coupon hording type wants to try, they better be on the ball.

PSS: That was obviously a two-bill scenario, because if it was on one PECO bill, it would look something like http://www.puc.state.pa.us/general/c...kdown-PECO.pdf . I interviewed dozens of suppliers and PECO and the PUC on the phone, and I bet it's a matter of time before people get stiffed on confusing tax semantics in out of state two-bill scenarios. Best bet is to get on the horn and grill them like I did when I wrote http://www.MakeBenProud.com/
