Default Fictitious Name application - needs to be advertised?

    Hello,

When you set up a company using some made-up name you have to file a state "fictitious name" application. The instructions say to advertise the application in a local newspaper.

Do people actually do this (the advertising part)? Will anybody ever check?

    Thanks.

C'mon, this is about the only revenue stream newspapers have left and your going to deny them.

Yes, and maybe. In the course of litigation, I've demanded proof, and I know that some banks do before they will allow you to open accounts.

I recommend using William J. Mansfield, Inc. for legal advertising. They add a premium of $12, but they handle all of the placement of the ads and then provide you with proof of advertisement (which you should keep).
