Or would there be much loss at all?

I find it difficult to believe that very many people would want to spend extra gas money just to avoid a 1% sales tax increase at home.

You got something to back up that only "some" of those sales will return, or are you just making assumptions?

How would it? If you buy a car, you're paying the tax no matter where you buy it. If you're buying a big-ticket item (an appliance, for instance) and have any sense, you're already going to purchase it elsewhere.

Clothing isn't taxed, and smaller purchases (books, magazines, etc) are matters of convenience, so a few more cents isn't going to be a deterrent.

The resulting numbers are pretty consistent. For every 1% a sales tax is raised, 1% of the revenue is lost from "border effect".

I discussed this with a prominent Penn econ professor while legislation was all still being debated.

In many parts of the city going outside the city may be as close as going to a shopping area inside the city.

Like anywhere in the NE or NW.
I'm not seeing all these supposed bikes in all these million dollar bike lanes.

And that's more true now than it was when the sales tax was 7%?

    Has city council changed geography?

They would be making those choices regardless of a 1% sales tax difference, depending on which stores cost less to begin with or are having sales, which have the selection they want, etc.
