    Went to the launch reception last night at the new Hotel Monaco, but got there too late to hear the presentation. :-(

    The food and drinks were yummy, though...and the visit to the rooftop bar afterwards was awesome.

    They are both in Washinton Square West, if civic associations matter. But don't tell Point Breeze and KJ that marketing can differ from neighborhood names or they might become even more dangerous.

    I liked the slogan of the old campaign "Where America began and New Jersey still drinks"

    1) You'd think the OCD would have me on its media mailing list by now. Apparently not;

    2) Isn't the Monaco grand? (Go take a look at my Facebook profile pic - as you can see, I was dressed for the occasion of its official grand opening, one week after it actually opened to the public);

    3) Glad to see the OCD or whoever came up with the term has jettisoned "Hipstoric"(TM).

    Midtown Village and the Gayborhood can coexist, I say. I seem to be stubbornly alone in holding this view - everyone else gets bent out of shape over the latter marketing term arising alongside the former never-official name, rainbow-flag street signs be damned.

    The City Planning Commission recognizes only one name for this area: Washington Square West. So there.

    Actually, that deflates, not reinforces, their point.

    But the problem with Newbold is that it was a term created by people moving into an area that had previously been terra incognita to their ilk, even if it does honor the former name of a street in the neighborhood. Yes, the local rabble-rousers are glomming on to this to advance their own attempts to stop change, but that doesn't make them totally wrong: where they are right is in noting that there was something already there at the time. That does not mean, however, that it can't get a new name.

    As long as its not "The Gaye Olde Village of Midtowne" I don't think it matters terribly.

    Also Newbold has not one but two civic associations. Point Breeze has a non-profit development corporation and some "Concerned Citizens" (which sounds like a Neighborhood Watch group) - neither of which are governing structures particularly prone to open elections.

    I miss the good ol' Old City where Sassafras and Serrano's ruled dinners and Brownie's was a "scary dive" for outsiders.
    Why so many pulsing clubs still? And failing.
    That is why I move out.

    It should be pointed out that the local rabble-rousers are a little slow to react, considering that the Newbold neighborhood name was coined about a decade ago (2003 if you go by wikipedia) and decried by ChiefSalsa on the former Phillyblog almost that long ago.

    This is going to be amazing. Really. I'm so excited when so much money is wasted in 'rebranding' a neighborhood. Soon, Jersey drunks will look up at the new banners and say, "you know I'm not going to throw up on the sidewalk when leaving the bar, and maybe I won't shoot anyone tonight since they're putting out such pretty 4color brochures!"

    Glad to hear that they're finally retiring their previous slogan -- 45% history + 35% surface lots + 20% bros 'n hos = 100% Old City.

    The rebranding could be"History during the daylight hours....some good restaurants till 10pm...then Jersey shore till people puke, piss, shoot each other and get arrested"

    Rebranding? That would be the old/current brand.

    The Monaco is lovely...I'd really enjoyed staying at the Madeira on return trips to DC, so I've been looking forward to a Kimpton hotel opening in the 'hood.

    Ohhh yes, what a big a relief that "Hipstoric" has been retired. It never caught on anyway, except to joke about.
