Default Trees at the Lightning Bolt Plaza ?

Does anyone know why they removed all the trees at the foot of the Ben Franklin Bridge on the Lightning Bolt plaza ?

There were trees and "banner posts" installed in 2000 along the sidewalk adjacent to the roadway approaching the bridge. For the most part, they were removed by trucks cutting the curve too close to the sidewalk.
